Low sulfur fuel and biodiesel are taking their toll on diesel injection pumps, especially pumps that were not originally assembled to be used with these fuels. When your pump needs work, what do you do? Buying a used one is a gamble -- you can never be certain of its condition. Paying someone to rebuild your old pump can cost hundreds of dollars. Buying a new pump can cost over a thousand dollars. Why not rebuild your own? It's not as difficult as you might think, and can usually be accomplished for the cost of a gasket kit ($20-$30).
This package contains a wealth of rebuild instruction for mechanical VE-type injection pumps. This includes all pre-TDI Volkswagen pumps, and many of the pre-electronic injection pumps used by Toyota, Mazda, Isuzu, Dodge, Chevy, Ford, Mitsubushi, Yanmar, and others. VW TDI pumps through about 2003 are still VE-type pumps, except that they are electronically controlled. The instructions presented in this package will not cover the electronics portion of TDI pumps, but the mechanics will be very similar. Now included with this package is a pdf file that explains the major differences between the mechanical VE pump and the VP37 TDI pump (it will not discuss diagnosis of electrical problems, for which you may need specialized equipment and skills to troubleshoot). Please note that the pump being disassembled in the VIDEO portion of this package is a standard mechanical VE pump, not a TDI pump.
Included in this package are:
1) Two hours worth of hands-on instruction on DVD, including a full explanation of the tools necessary for a pump rebuild, and a complete step-by-step teardown, inspection, and reassembly using all new gaskets and seals. Also included on the DVD, at the end, is a tutorial on rebuilding injectors.
2) Twenty-eight pages worth of written instruction on CD (PDF file) with over 100 color photos, drawings, and diagrams, including detailed information on fabricating a few special tools which are necessary for some pumps. A complete list of tools and parts resources are also included, along with step-by-step instructions for pump disassembly, inspection, and parts replacement.
3) Four pages of discussion and pictures regarding the major differences in disassembly of the VP37 TDI pump versus the mechanical VE pump.
Also, please note that the DVD has not been optimized for high definition. It is best viewed with the DVD-R drive on your computer, or using a standard low-res NTSC DVD player. The PDF files on the CD requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or later (free on Adobe's website).
A few more words about what I'm selling:
1)You assume all liability for the work you do on your own pump. I'm merely providing instruction and have no control over the quality of your work; hence, I will not be held liable if you ruin your pump or pinch your finger.
2)I do not offer any rebuild services. This DVD/CD combo is not some ploy to get you in over your head and then 'come to your rescue' by offering to rebuild your pump for some outrageous fee. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them to the best of my knowledge (for free), but that's as far as my help goes.
3)These instructions do not tell you how to calibrate your pump. For two reasons: A)Most shade tree mechanics do not have the expensive equipment necessary to do a calibration, B)It is usually unnecessary to do a calibration unless major work has been done to the pump, or unless you want to ensure that your pump meets exact manufacturer's specs. Should you feel that a calibration is necessary, simply bring your pump to a professional to have it done.
