Types of Panel

Staircase panels are pre-shaped to allow them to fit to almost any angle staircase.  Manufactured from 8mm toughened safety glass, each staircase glass panel measures 270 wide.  An average straight flight will require 8 panels however use the table below to get an idea of how many panels you will need. 

Each panel is designed to set your handrail at the correct 900mm high above the treads to meet UK building regulations.  The panels feature polished and radiused edges for safety.  (The actual panel measures 975mm high x 270mm wide.  However this will set your handrail at 900mm above the front edge of the treads).

Landing panels are designed for use along the landing with a horizontal handrail and are the same 8mm toughened safety glass.  The standard panel is 270mm wide by 790mm high. 

We also offer a narrow landing return panel which is 100mm wide.  This can be helpful when you have a very short section of landing handrail, where a full landing panel will not fit.

German Panel Manufacture

Most glass panels on sale in the UK are imported from the far east and are of unknown quality.  All of our panels are manufactured in Germany to strict quality standards.  This allows us to be sure of the quality we are supplying you.  It also means that should your building inspector ask, we can provide certificate evidence that the glass is toughened to comply with UK Building Regulations.

How Many Glass Panels Will I Need for My Stairs?

You will need to correct number of glass panels to ensure that when installed a 100mm ball cannot pass between the panels to comply with UK Building Regulations.  In most cases this means a gap between panels of approx 50mm although this will subtly change dependant on the angle of the stairs. 

To help you work out what you need, please use our quick calculator below.  Measure the length of your staircase handrail in mm between the newel posts and then use the chart below to check how many panels you need.  Measure along the angled top of the handrail, not the horizontal distance the rail travels.

Please note that the quick calculator uses an average staircase angle of 42 degrees and is therefore a guide only.  If you stairs are shallower you may need more panels, steeper and you may need less.   If you wish to calculate yourself, measure the horizontal distance and calculate using 270mm wide panels and max 50mm between panels.
