Original
large-format 1832 antique copper engraved map of North America locates
Indian tribes, forts, trading posts, western territories, and the
discoveries of
Lewis and Clark.
- The map was engraved and
printed by Fenner, Sears & Company and published in 1832 by
Hinton, Simpkin & Marshall, London.
- The image area measures a generous 50.5 x 41.2 cm [20" x
16¼"].
- The map depicts the continent just before the push for
westward expansion filled in the topographical details
west of the Mississippi River.
- Texas and the Southwest still belong to Mexico, with the
entire Southwest named New California.
-
The western boundary between the
United States and Canada is left undesignated, and the region of
present
day Oregon, Washington and British Columbia is labeled New Georgia.
-
The
west coast from Alaska (Russian Territory) to Oregon is labeled New
Norfolk, New Cornwall, New Hanover, and New Albion.
- There's a large Arkansas Territory, and a massive
Missouri Territory extends west and north from the Mississippi River.
-
Named Indian tribes and settlements include the Blackfoot, Snake,
Village of Rascals, Shoshone, Dog Rib, Cherokees, Chickasaws, Quarrellers, Osage, Ricarees,
and
Dakota or Sioux.
-
There is a canoe camp on a fork of the Saptin or Lewiss River (today
known as the
Snake River), and the map locates a handful of forts and trading posts.
- Labeled discoveries in the northern latitudes suggest the
existence of the long-sought-after Northwest Passage.
- In the eastern United States the northern border of Maine is undefined, Milledgeville is the capital
of Georgia, and there is no West Virginia.
- Topography drawn in relief and attractive coastline
shading give this marvelous map a handsome and dramatic appearance.
-
