Geology: Bloodstones belong to the jasper family and are distinguished by virtue of green jaspers with red points. Its leek-green color derives from extremely small, massive quantities of intercalated chloride laminae. The red spots are caused by iron oxide. Iron, manganese and titanium give this jasper its characteristic proper­ties. Bloodstone is an exceptionally tough stone and has a hardness of 7. The most beautiful bloodstones are found in India and China. Other sites, where they can be found, are located in Brazil and Australia.

Historical tradition: The ancient Greeks valued the bloodstone as a light-bringing precious stone, which, because of its green color, symbolizes life on Earth, while the red spots embody the blood of the Earth. They thought that wearing a bloodstone would produce a more harmonious relationship with the gods of the Earth and the water, and it would grant the wearer a long life. In India and Egypt this stone is still considered today to be a powerful healing stone, which not only wards off diseases and illnesses, but enemies, too. From Christian peoples, as well as from Hildegard von Bingen, the legend has been handed down, that the red drops represent the blood of Christ, which in remembrance of him continue to flow in the arteries of the Earth, in all living beings and in us as well.

Curative and therapeutic effects on the body: The "fossil drops of blood" of the Earth in bloodstone also have powerful effects on our blood and circula­tory system. Through its powerful purifying effect on the blood, of course, of all those organs through which blood flows are purified too. Especially, the spleen, kidneys and the liver are cleansed. Bloodstone also pro­tects the heart from pain and disorders of heart rhythm, and it heals chronic and acute myocardial insuffi­ciency. Vascular congestion in front of the heart caused by myocardial insufficiency, breathlessness and edema can be alleviated by using the healing bloodstone. The heart and the whole blood circulatory system are stabilized and reinforced. Bloodstone also frees the lungs and the vessels from deposits and poisoning. As a chain or as water or tea, bloodstone can heal tenosynovitis, sciatica, stitches in the side, gout, cramps in the calf muscle, rheumatic pain and, above all, varicose veins. This effect can be additionally reinforced, when the bloodstone is massaged over the affected site. Bloodstone also has a strong healing effect on the muscle system, which is liberated from neuritis and rheumatism. Bloodstone offers protection against iron deficiencies, abdominal pain and abdominal disorders. It protects newborn babies against negative influences. Bloodstone strengthens the baby's whole body and makes it easier for the mother and the child during birth. In winter, when colds and the influenza are abundant, it is recommen­ded to carry a bloodstone chain around the neck. This warms the circulation and offers protection against infections. When laid on the ears or on the nose, it can heal buzzing in the ears, inflammation of the audi­tory canal, earache and, indeed, hearing deficiencies. Influenza infections, running nose and inflammation of the nasal mucous membranes can likewise   be healed well using bloodstone.

Curative and therapeutic effects on the mind: When placed under the pillow, bloodstone gives protection against nightmares. These can be quickly healed by using blood­stone as a chain, life stone or thumb stone.

Chakra: For lithotherapy we recommend, that you lay bloodstone on the heart chakra, because it has its greatest influence with this chakra. But also placed on the solar plexus and other chakras, bloodstone reveals itself to be an illuminating stone. This was, for example, also noticed by the Greeks, who gave it the name Helios, which means "sun". However, the energy of the bloodstone does not enter us in a straight line, but instead always in a spiral. If you use bloodstone for meditation, you should allow for a lot of time. If you combine bloodstone with red jasper, you can additionally strengthen its effects. We recommend, that before carry­ing out bloodstone therapy, you always open the desired chakras with a clear crystal massage rod.

How can I obtain a bloodstone and how should I look after it? You can obtain bloodstone as tumbled stones, hand stones, pendants, beads, pyramids, chains, donuts and many fantastic forms for necklaces and leather bands. We do not recommend that you buy it as a rough stone, because it has razor-sharp edges. You should discharge this stone regularly following use under lukewarm, running water. Chains should be discharged once a month overnight in a dry bowl with hematite tumbled sto­nes. Charging in the sun is very good for bloodstone, but, nevertheless, we recommend you to charge the bloodstone in a group of crystals, because bloodstone can store this energy much more intensively.
