You are looking at Scotchlock / Wire Connectors / Crimp Connectors. These are used to connect together two wires safely and securely. These come to great use on vehicle electrics, including the connection of trailers and 7-pin plugs along with many other uses.

No special tools needed. Pliers do the job.

The connectors are compatible with cables with a thickness between 1.1 mm and 2.6 mm.
