Speedometers have an interesting history in mechanics. The first speedometer was invented in 1888 by Josip Belusic from Croatia, and was actually named a velocimeter. They were first seen in automobiles in the 1900’s and then became standard a decade later. Modern electronic speedometer sensors are installed on the rear of the truck transmission. The sensor is a flat metal plate with serrations placed between a helix and a sensor that reads magnetic fields. The serrations move between the helix and sensor creating a magnetic the field. The pulse of the magnetic field is turned into a speed reading and sent along to the digital speedometer gauge.
