From Southern California all the way to southern Washington, the California Poppy can be found growing in open, grassy areas and deserts.  

It grows so well on the west coast of the USA that it is said early Spanish explorers would guide their ships with the bright orange hue given off by the bounty of these flowers along California's coastline.  The same hue is a large part of the reason it is the state flower of California, offering a perfect representation of the "Golden State". 

 Before any of these Spanish explorers ventured to any of the Americas, the Native Americans were using this wonderful plant for a variety of medicinal purposes, many for which it is still used today

California Poppy is a member of the poppy family (papaver), but it contains no opium or opiates.  It is safe and non-addictive, and its sedative properties come from other alkaloids.

Active Ingredients:

California Poppy consists of numerous isoquinoline alkaloids and folavone glycosides which contribute to most of the medicinal properties of this plant.  The most important one is Californidine.  The rest consist of (alkaloids) californidine, sanguinarine, escholzine, proptine, crytpopine, chelidonine and (glycosides) rutin, quercitin, and isorhamnetin.

Dosage:

Typical dosage is 30 drops, once per day.

How to take it?

Our tinctures contain 40% grain alcohol in order to preserve the quality of the solution.  Since alcohol can have a rather offensive taste, we have a number of suggestions for how to ingest this:

•         Place the drops directly under the tongue and chase with a small glass of water, juice, or any other fluid that may taste more pleasant

•         Place the drops directly in an ounce or so of water or other fluid and drink that

•         If serving to children under the age of 21, or if you want to avoid the harsh taste of the alcohol, you can either let the tincture sit out or heat it up on very low heat, until the alcohol evaporates (alcohol evaporates faster than water)
