Handsome
fold-out 1942 Shell road map of the state of Washington, printed more
than 75 years
ago. -
This map opens to 18" x 24" and has great
detail on old highway alignments, including U.S. Routes 99 and 101,
with
cartography by H.M. Gousha.

On the reverse side there are inset plans
of Olympic and Mount Rainier National Parks, along with a
transcontinental driving map of the United States.

The map was distributed by the Shell Oil Company in 1942 and is dated
by the code number in the lower margin: 10-P 1942-1. Population data is from
the 1940 census.

It is a scarce
wartime issue and includes a printed statement on the front cover: "All
points of military interest have been removed voluntarily from this map
and index."

A printed message in the lower margin of the map reads: "Maps are paper
— Paper is important to our war effort — Help us conserve it by saving
this map."
