“Little League Sports have become such an integral part of the American Scene and family life; I felt some of the equipment used in the game of baseball would be a good subject matter for this print.

Little League Baseball started in 1939 in Williamsport, PA. The Little League World Series is played there annually.  The field is two-thirds the size of a professional baseball diamond.  Six-inning games are played.  Leagues have 4 to 5 teams that play a season of about 15 games.  After completion of the local season, an all-star team is selected consisting of 14 players.  Tournament play leading to the world series begins in late July.  The winning teams advance through area, district, section, state, division and regional tournaments to become one of eight teams in the World Series play-offs that are held in Williamsport.  A single loss eliminates a team from the rest of the series.

The ball is identical in size and weight with the professional ball.  The bat is smaller.  IT may not exceed 33 inches in length of 2 ¼ inches at its smallest part.  I have a wooden bat in the painting.  (Sentiment prevailed.  The bat was used by our son, Mark.)  Aluminum bats prevail in all leagues now.

I want to thank Mr. Joe Drake for his assistance in obtaining the ball (which had been signed by all his boys on an all-star team), and all the equipment in the painting except the bat and shoes.  Joe Drake has been involved in Little League management and coaching for a number of years.  The shoes belong to Michael Gillam of Crestwood, Ky.
