If you're worried about your cholesterol level and have already started exercising and eating healthier foods, you might wonder if adding a cholesterol-lowering supplement to your diet can help reduce your numbers.

HEALTHY ARTERIES - NIACIN

Nicotinic acid or Niacin, one of the water-soluble B vitamins, improves all lipoproteins when given in doses well above the vitamin requirement. Nicotinic acid lowers the total cholesterol, "bad" LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while raising the "good" HDL-cholesterol level.

Vitamin B3, also called Niacin, is one of the eight B-complex water-soluble vitamins. Niacin has a wide range of uses in the body, helping functions in the digestive system, skin and nervous system. Niacin, a name coined from nicotinic acid vitamin, comes in several forms, including Niacinamide (nicotinamide) and inositol hexanicotinate. Each of these forms has various uses as well.

Food sources of Niacin include yeast, meat, fish, milk, eggs, nuts, green vegetables, beans and enriched breads and cereals.  The human body can also make Niacin from the amino acid tryptophan, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Benefits
Like other B vitamins, Niacin helps the body break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. In addition, it plays a role in gland and liver function. Niacin has a role in producing certain hormones in the adrenal glands and helps remove harmful chemicals from the liver.
It also can play a part in improving health. It is also used for care of headaches, circulation problems and dizziness. It used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. The Mayo Clinic reported that Niacin can raise HDL (good) cholesterol by more than 30 percent.
Some studies have found that taking Niacin may help stroke patients. Ischemic stroke is caused by an obstruction within a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain and accounts for 87 percent of all cases.
It may be good for other skin conditions, too.
Those who have intimacy problems may also benefit from Niacin, vitamin B3 was found to improve the ability to maintain sexual power in men.

What is POLICOSANOL?

Policosanol is a naturally occurring complex alcohol molecule harvested from plant waxes originally derived from sugar cane.  Later it was found that Policosanol can be isolated from bees wax and some plant materials with fatty acids.
Small studies and anecdotal evidence seem to suggest that policosanol can reduce the occurence of low density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol) in the liver.  Also suggested is that it can decrease sticky particles in the blood known as platelets which can help reduce the likelihood of blood clots and increase circulation reducing pain and narrowing of blood vessels.

What does Policosanol do?
Policosanol is reported to also reduce LDL cholesterol (bad) while increasing HDL cholesterol (good).
One other little beneficial side-effect was that using  of policosanol during peak cholesterol production (at night) along with the other four horsemen of fat-loss (garlic extract, EGCG, and alpha-lipoic acid) during the day resulted in greater weight-loss
In fact, one only has to take a quick gander at WebMD reviews around policosanol to see a trend.  Like all things of this nature some people don’t do well with it for whatever reason but there does seem to be an overall consistency with regard to positive cholesterol reduction specifically.
Policosanol for Weight Loss and Control. Policosanol alone may reduce your cholesterol, but to supercharge your metabolism it needs to be part of a medley.
With Policosanol, some people have reported benefits for: skin redness and rash, migraines, insomnia or drowsiness, irritability, upset stomach, increased appetite, trouble urinating and weight loss.

GUGULIPID

Gugulipid is a natural health product used primarily to reduce elevated blood cholesterol levels. It has been used for many years as a hypocholesterolemic agent in India, where it has received prescription drug status, due to its high level of efficacy as determined by clinical trials.
Remarkably, it is an extremely safe product relative to most cholesterol-lowering drugs used in modern medicine (especially when compared to the commonly used statin drugs, which inhibit the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme and can lead to liver damage). At the same time, Gugulipid shows a similar therapeutic effect to many cholesterol-lowering drugs, without any apparent risk of liver damage. As such, natural health practitioners (including chiropractors) should be aware of the scientific evidence pertaining to the cholesterol-lowering effects of Gugulipid and its safety profile, including potential drug-nutrient interactions.

 Active Constituents
Guggul contains resin, volatile oils and gum. The Gugulipid extract is formed by isolating ketonic steroid compounds in the gum resin called guggulsterones (shown to be guggul's active constituent), accounting for its cholesterol- and triglyceride-lowering effects.
Clinical Application and Mechanism of Action: High Cholesterol and/or Triglycerides
A striking feature is its lack of toxicity. Unlike other cholesterol-lowering drugs, administration of Gugulipid is not associated with any significant side-effects, liver damage or toxicity.  of guggulsterone daily can significantly lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and improve the LDL-to-HDL-cholesterol ratio, in a manner associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and related cardiovascular disorders. Gugulipid also has been shown to reduce the stickiness of blood platelets, another biological action associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disorder.
Anti-inflammatory Effects
In experimental animal models, gum guggul demonstrate 20 percent of the anti-inflammatory potency as hydrocortisone, and the equivalent anti-inflammatory potency as phyenylbutazone and ibuprofen and care of other inflammatory joint conditions.
The lipid-lowering effect of gum guggul may help control cystic acne.
