Natural Silk vs Satin/Artificial Silk

Silk is a natural fiber and satin is man-made fabric from polyester or other materials. Satin does not have all the above listed benefits of silk.

Silk is harder to produce, as a single thread requires silk from thousands of silk worms. This makes silk much more expensive than satin which comes from synthetic fibers.

Synthetic satin (e.g. polyester) may feel nice and soft in your hand, most of the time it is very similar to a silk finish, but after an 8 hour sleep your hair and facial skin can really feel the difference. Satin is very slippery and yet will catch your skin if your hands are very rough and callused. However, 100% pure silk will not catch your skin the way polyester “silk” does. It is softer in texture and very smooth to the touch. Silk is breathable and not sweat like satin.

Why Use a Natural Silk Pillowcase?

A silk pillowcase is one of the smartest beauty products you can invest in. Sleeping on silk pillowcase is the easiest, effective beauty treatment you can pamper your skin and hair with! There are so many amazing and instantly noticeable benefits of silk pillowcase use you wouldn’t sleep on anything else.

Skin & Hair Benefits

Silk is made up of sericin that has a high hydroxy amino acid content which regulates the skin's moisture content. It also has a unique carbohydrate moiety and a unique repetitive amino acid sequence which give it a high affinity for bonding to adhering proteins resulting in a tightening, anti-wrinkle effect. It could:

 Naturally Hydrates the Skin While You Sleep

 Prevent Wrinkles

 Help Skin Absorb More of the Serums and Creams before Going to Bed

 Lower the Risk of Skin Infection and Skin Irritation

 Reduces moisture loss from your hair as you sleep.

 Reduces Hair Split Ends

 Reduces Bed Hair & Frizzy Hair

Sleep Benefit

Silk threads allow for a 33% to a 38% space in between them in their structure, being able to keep humidity and air. That is the reason why silk can keep the body cold in summer and warm in winter and make your sleeping environment stay at more constant temperature.

Silk fabric offers a softer, smoother and more hygienic experience that helps you feel more rested and ready for the next day

Health Benefits

Silk is naturally hypoallergenic giving it a natural resistance to dust mites, fungus and mould, as well as numerous other allergens. For this reason it is perfect for asthmatics and many other allergy sufferers.

Silk has less chemicals then those often found in other textiles like cotton, polyester and rayon. Silk is produced from domesticated silk worms that are bred in captivity with no predators. Thus no chemicals are needed to protect them.

Silk pillowcases are suitable for all skin types and ages including young children.

Luxury Factor

Silk pillowcases have that luxurious pamper factor that just makes them extra special to sleep on. There is no more luxurious feeling at the end of the day than laying your head on a soft, smooth silk pillowcase.

How to Identify Genuine Pure Silk from Fake Silk?

It is important to watch out for fake silk or blended silk. People are always trying to use all sorts of strategies trick you into buying various kinds of fake silk. Unfortunately, unlike in life, you can’t fake it till you make it with silk.

Testing with Bleach: Pure Silk will have fully dissolved in bleach within a couple minutes. It’s the most straight forward way to test because even silk blended won’t dissolve in bleach. If you want to test out product, we suggest grab a tiny bit of silk fiber from the invisible corner (avoid sewing thread) to minimize the damage.

Playing (CAREFULLY) with Fire: Real silk will slowly burn while exposed to the flame, won’t catch fire, will smell like burning hair while touching the flame, but will stop burning almost immediately when the flame is removed.  Fake silk, on the other hand, will melt into beads, smell like burning plastic, and can also catch fire, continuing to burn when you remove the flame!

Why Silk is not cheap

(some seller sell 'silk' pillowcase less than $15 which actually not real silk)

Silk is high priced due to the need for lots of *hand labor* needed to produce quality silk. Silkworms are “farmed” by raising them indoors on racks with the mulberry leaves to feed the caterpillars brought to them - they eat a lot for that period of time, 24 hours a day, so the workers are busy. There may be machines for doing part of the work for spinning cocoons - but the highest priced silks may have hand labor there, too, to get unbroken silk filaments unwound from the cocoon for the smoothest texture of the thread for weaving after spinning.
