1960s Pair of Joseph Hoffman Fledermaus Inspired Chairs
Mid-Century Modern 1960s black gloss lacquer armchairs inspired by the Fledermaus chair by Joseph Hoffmann, upholstered in a rose and ivory checkered chenille fabric. Wood lacquered chairs in the style of the original, circa 1905 designed by the visionary architect and designer Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956.) Hoffman was influenced by the the Arts and Crafts Movement and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Concerned with geometry, form, clean lines and structure; it is apparent that these chairs are well thought out. As one of his most popular chairs during the period, this model was sold by both the firms. Currently, it is also the chair that is widely chosen for exhibitions when there is a museum retrospective. The Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as many other museums have pieces by Josef Hoffman in their permanent collections. The size of the chairs are a larger size, more comfortable, then the 1905 very small-scale originals. Reduced from $4,298. to $ 3,298. Provenance-assembled from our family's Maryland estate, The Edith Hale Harkness estate. The Harkness Family was among 19th century America's first philanthropic society families as financiers to Rockefeller & Flagler for standard oil. Share the legacy!
