Original antique wood engraving captioned VISITING THE CAWNPOOR MEMORIAL, drawn by Sir Sydney Prior Hall (1842-1922).

Hall was a highly respected illustrator who began working for THE GRAPHIC when it started in 1869, and later became a successful portrait painter. In 1876, he was appointed official artist to accompany the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, on his tour of India, which also included visits to the Courts of Greece, Egypt, Spain and Portugal, travelling in the prince's suite on board S.S. SERAPIS.  His illustrations later appeared in THE PRINCE OF WALES' TOUR: A DIARY IN INDIA, written by William Howard Russell and published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London (1877).  Our family have been booksellers for sixty years and we always take great care of books. When some have to be discarded because of damage we save any prints that are beautiful in themselves; when we found a copy of this book, severely damaged by damp externally, we were astonished to find Hall's prints, for he could clearly see the funny side of the Prince's mission - and what could be odder than visiting the Empire, dressed up to the nines, with a retinue of advisers & military men, shooting elephants & tigers & observing strange customs.
