Medieval Spiked Axe, Studded Handle
32" Overall, 12" Blade Length

•••

Based on the Danish axe with the long curved bit, an early type of battle axe used primarily during the transition between the European Viking Age and early Middle Ages. Similar in design to the English long axe and hafted axe but with the addition of a deadly spike on the back that would have been especially effective for piercing any armor of that period.

The blade itself was reasonably light and forged very thin, making it superb for cutting. The weight of the body on top the edge is drives it with tremendous force. Many of these axes were constructed with a reinforced bit, typically of a higher carbon steel to facilitate a harder, sharper edge. Average weight of an axe this size was between 1 kg and 2 kg (2 and 4 pounds). This complex construction results in a lively and quick weapon with devastating cutting abilityThrough the course of the 10th–11th centuries, the Danish axe gained popularity in areas outside Scandinavia where Viking influence was strong, such as England, Ireland and Normandy. Historical accounts depict it as the weapon of the warrior elite in this period. (See Bayeux Tapestry for example) The spike would have been a later addition and intended primarily for piercing armor of the 13th century on. This style a forerunner to many of the pollarms and pollaxes that were developed in 14th - 15th century to breach plate armor.

Manufacturer 'This battle axe is fabricated in carbon steel with a hardwood shaft and will withstand light use*.  A good match for many Medieval personae at 32" overall.'

Comments: These are decent axes at this price.  I don't think you'll be disappointed. Good materials and solid construction. By 'light use' I mean fine for watermelons and home intruders, but no trees! Trees are tough. Basically this is meant to be a solid costume piece. If you need something more rugged and authentic please see my axes from GDFB and top-of-the-line Hanwei.
