How it all began Established in 1905 by Edmund Barton, 'Bartons' is a fourth generation family business based in Saint Helens, England.  Edmund, at the turn of the last century, with his wife Lydia, started their business by preparing vegetables in the back yard of their house in Lascelles Street, Saint Helens; steeping the vegetables in spiced vinegar and sauce mixes. They sold their pickles from hand carts, then horse and cart, through the cobbled streets. In the summer months, Edmund and Lydia brewed botanical sodas including Dandelion and Burdock, Sasperella and Lemonade, developing a business for the seasons. One of our first photographs shows Edmund in front of Bartons first motorised vehicle, in 1926.
