Reproduction of an Egyptian Scarab Inscribed with Good Wishes

The original is of glazed frit, more than 2500 years old.  Originally the glaze was bright green, now worn down to a pale color.

The scarab imitates the form of a beetle, for mythological reasons and as a pun in the ancient Egyptian language.  "Beetle" was Kheprer, and "become (something)" was kheper.  When inscribed with a name and mounted in a ring, it could be used as a signet.  It could also be mounted in jewelry as a good luck piece, like this specimen, which brings good wishes for the feast of the first of the month.

Authorized, copyrighted reproduction made of Alvastone, from the original at the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago, by Alva Museum Replicas, Inc.  New York, NY
