   The truth about acoustic foam compared to real diffusers: Studio foam has a pyramidal, egg crate or wedge shape form in order to "mimic" a real diffuser. Studio foam ''tries'' to diffuse and also absorb some of the sound but this is really bad because, in reality, diffusion has nothing to do with absorption. A diffuser is heavy and strong and an absorber is light and soft. Because foam has almost no diffusion or absorption properties and tends to absorb more only the high frequencies and just a few mids the result is that foam destroys the sound energy spectrum in a negative nonlinear way. Foam should be used with great caution in order to preserve the quality of your sound. For the reasons mentioned above these days smart pros & audiophiles are using real wood diffusers combined with rock mineral wool panels & huge bass traps. This combination has been used for over 35 years by many of the big recording studios.
