Handsome
original 1881 antique color lithographed map of Japan.
- The map was compiled and
engraved by William & Alexander Keith
Johnston, Edinburgh and has wonderful detail, with topography drawn in
relief.

The image area measures 23.3 x 17.1 cm [9¼" x 6¾"]. The water areas are
tinted in a delicate blue wash.
- There is an inset of Hokkaido (labeled Yezo), and a
number key identifies provinces.
- There are hundreds of named places and features,
including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and the
submarine telegraph line from Nagasaki to Shanghai.

The map was issued in an American edition of the Encyclopædia
Britannica, New York, 1881. It is identified as Plate IX,
Volume XIII, and it is
blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side

Condition: It is in very good condition,
bright and clean, with a small closed tear in the right margin, outside of the image area, and no marks or writing.
