Description

The lighthouses of Atlantic Canada embody the history and spirit of the rocky eastern shores, where the landscape shifts from soaring cliffs to picture-perfect coves. The last stop on the Canadian Coasts journey visits the Atlantic coast, where the sun rises first in Canada.  On the square-shaped reverse, a selectively gold-plated arrangement of iconic images highlights Atlantic Canada’s rich maritime heritage, while emphasizing Canada’s enduring connection with the sea.

Design:

The sun rises over the East Coast in this coin by Maurade Baynton, where the craggy rocks symbolize the rugged coastline and its many sheltered coves. From its central position, the gold-plated sun casts a warm morning light that illuminates Canada’s oldest operational lighthouse, the Sambro Island Lighthouse, one of many such landmarks that embody the region’s history and spirit. An impressively sized marine mammal, the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) symbolizes the diverse marine life found in the waters of the North Atlantic and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where whale-watching has become a popular tourist attraction. Anchoring the corners of the design is the lobster (Homarus americanus), an icon of the Atlantic fishing culture and an economic powerhouse. Gold plating also highlights the rim that frames the reverse, to reinforce the idea that everything in nature is beautifully interconnected. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…

  • More than half of the world’s supply of lobster comes from Canada — in fact, it is one of Canada’s most valuable seafood exports. Some of the largest populations of this brown-colored, nocturnal crustacean are found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off coast of Nova Scotia.
  • Between May and September, the waters off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador play an important role as part of the major feeding grounds for the Western North Atlantic population of humpback whales. Over 15 different species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) can be found in Canada’s eastern waters — a fact that makes Atlantic Canada a popular destination for whale watching.
  • Canada’s first lighthouse was completed in 1734 in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, but it was damaged and re-built several times (the current lighthouse is the fourth incarnation). Canada’s oldest surviving lighthouse is also the oldest working lighthouse in North America, and it is featured on the coin’s reverse: the Sambro Island Lighthouse.  It was built in 1758 at the entrance to Halifax Harbor.

Photos:

When a listing offers multiples of the same coin, one coin is picked at random and photographed.  Since all coins offered in that listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all coins offered.  These photos were taken through the plastic cling film that protects the coins; any dust, etc., on the outside surface of the capsules doesn’t affect the coins.

Surface areas that appear black on some proof coin photos are actually highly polished, mirror-bright metal reflecting the color of the camera.  We place the coin at an angle, in some photos, to better depict the mirror bright finishes.  However, angling the coin usually results in one side of the coin being slightly out of focus.

Our goal is to provide clear, high definition photos that accurately represent the coin(s) offered in each of our eBay listings.  Whenever possible, we use actual photos of our coins, rather than just “artist’s conception” drawings from the Mint.  We frequently update and upgrade the photos that appear with our listings, using improved cameras and lenses and better lighting.  We will honor your requests for additional photos as quickly as our schedule permits.
