Description:
Fine ceramic plate with a potter at work. Titled: Pottemageren/ The potter.  Signed Hjalmer Nielsen and dated 1933 on the back. Unika piece. Meaning this is the only one of its kind. 

This particular piece was exhibited at the Spring Show in Copenhagen 1942. A photocopy of the frontpage and its listing inside the catalogue will be included with this work. 

This piece may have been inspired by the Indian fairly tale  called “ Den tapre pottemager/ The Brave potter. Published in 1919. We own the book where V. Larsen, the Danish illustrator of the book has written a note to Hjalmer Nielsen dated 1932. The original book with dedication and a certificate of authenticity will be included with this work. 



Condition.

Hjalmer Nielsen (1892-1961)
Listed Danish ceramicist and painter. Born in Copenhagen in 1892.  Educated at the technical school of arts in 1906. His training showed influence from the Nordic symbolist movement. During his later years he was strongly inspired by artists from the Vienna Secession and the upcoming German Expressionism. He later travelled to Berlin in 1921 where he depicted the nightlife of the golden twenties. During his time in Germany, he attended the many expressionist art shows and he befriended the German artist George Grosz and associated the Basel Rot-Blau group.  Hjalmer Nielsen also spent time in Paris, where he spent time with fellow Danish artists, Knut Hansen and Mogens Vantore.  Other travels include: Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Hjalmer Nielsen debuted with his own series of paintings at the artists free exhibition in 1919 and had shows at the Royal Charlottenborg exhibition in 1920,1923 and 1924.  In 1921, he received the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone scholarship, that founded his many travels and study tours in Europe.  In 1937, he became a member of The Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen. Besides painting, Hjalmer Nielsen also did a long series of pottery ,ceramic vases and plates for the Danish ceramic company Moller & Bogely. He is also known for his own private series of ceramic sculptures, architectural designs and wall ornaments. His ceramic pieces were exhibited at the Spring show in Copenhagen 1942.
