Red Papaya - Dragon Fruit

THESE ARE THE EASIEST PLANTS SEEDS YOU WILL EVER GROW!

Pitaya, also known as pitahaya or dragon fruit, belongs to the cactus family. It’s a climbing cactus and needs support for growing. The flowers are unique, and one among the largest in the world with a diameter of 25 cm and is about 30 cm long. One more feature of its bloom is: it only opens for one night and exudes an inviting fruity fragrance.

Common Name: Hylocereus undatus

Family: Cactaceae

US Hardiness Zones: 9-11

In other zones, you can grow your dragon fruit in a container so you can bring it indoors for the winter. The ideal growing temperatures for dragon fruit are between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

The red pitahaya (Hylocereus undatus) is a species of Cactaceae and is the most cultivated species in the genus. It is used both as an ornamental vine and as a fruit crop - the pitahaya or dragon fruit.

How to Germinate Dragon Fruit from seeds:

 1. Fill a flat or pots that have ample holes for drainage most of the way with a sterile germinating medium that offers excellent drainage and low fertility; purchase or create the medium by combining equal parts peat moss and sand, perlite or vermiculite.

 2. Sow the dragon fruit seeds evenly over the surface of the medium.

 3. Sprinkle a very light layer of germinating medium over the seeds, using just enough to barely cover the seeds.

 4. Mist the seeds and medium gently but thoroughly at the time of sowing and whenever the medium is dry to the touch prior to germination.

 5. Cover the flat or other container with a glass or plastic lid or enclose it in a polyethylene or plastic bag to help maintain a high level of humidity around the seeds and minimize the need for misting.

 6. Place the flat or other container with seeds in a spot that receives bright but indirect light and has a temperature between about 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds should germinate within 15 to 45 days. Remove any plastic, glass or polyethylene covering once germination occurs and allow the medium surface to dry out slightly between waterings. Transplant them to bigger pots when necessary.

Location

Dragon fruit is a cactus, which means it loves heat and sun. It’s better to plant it in a spot that is dry and sunny. If you live in a hot climate, it’s best to choose a location that remains partially shaded.

Soil

For growing dragonfruit, opt for well-draining soil that is sandy and loamy. A mixture of sand in garden soil would be appropriate. It is forgiving to poor soil.

Water

Since the dragon fruit is a cactus, water it moderately with care like you do with other succulents. Water only when the soil dries out.

Fertilizer for Dragon Fruit

Fertilize dragon fruit with a balanced fertilizer every month when the plant is actively growing in its growing season. Stop fertilizing in winter if you’re growing it in a cool climate. Side dressing with aged manure or compost can also be done occasionally.

Dragon Fruit Pruning

Pruning is required to train this plant on the trellis, improve air circulation and prevent fungal infection and maintain its height, otherwise, it can grow up to 20 feet tall in the optimum growing conditions. Prune it annually by removing all the overgrowing, decaying, overcrowding, and dead stems saving only the healthier and productive ones.

Buy With Confidence

We aim to provide our customers with the highest quality product and service. As with all seeds 100% germination success should not be expected although we select varieties known for their relatively higher success rates.

Please note:

Every effort is taken to ensure the quality of our seeds. Germination is affected by such factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. Although we do everything possible to get seeds to you in the best possible condition these factors are totally outside of our control and once you receive the seeds its over to you.  Consequently, we can take no responsibility for the suitability to your local conditions of any variety offered, the indicative cultivation advice provided or ultimately the varieties performance.  As such you should seek local advice to carefully ensure your local conditions and the time of season are appropriate to the variety purchased.
