William Morris lived near London from 1834 to 1896.  His ambition was to be a painter but he gained his reputation and status position from his works as a writer, poet, publisher, political thinker and activist.  He is now most famoulsy remembered and known for his designs, patterns and tapestries (most of which are in Museums now with a few still in private collectors hands) which combine British floral themes with historical and traditional decorative patterns to produce truly magnificent works of art.
