Original
1853 antique lithographed map: Preliminary Sketch of
Pungoteague Creek, Virginia.
- This map is drawn on a scale
of 1:40,000 from a trigonometric survey by Lieutenants B.F. Sands and
J.J. Almy, U.S. Navy.
- Details include soundings, bottom conditions,
navigational aids, and two proposed sites for a lighthouse, in the
shallows
just to the west of the mouth of Butcher's Creek in Assomack County on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
- The lighthouse was constructed and commissioned in 1854,
the year after this map was drawn. It was
destroyed by an ice floe in 1856 — the shortest recorded existence of
any lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay, at just 459 days.
- Other labeled features on the map include the steamboat
wharf on the south shore of Pungoteague Creek,
South Marsh Island, and Nandua Creek.
- The map was published in a report by Alexander Dallas
Bache,
Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. It is dated 1853.
-
The image area measures 23 x 26.6 cm
[8¼" x 10½"].
- Condition: This map is in excellent
condition,
bright and clean, with a faint vertical fold, as issued, and no
marks, rips, or tears. It is printed on a
lightweight paper, typical of mid-19th century
government fold-outs, and it is
blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the
scans and feel free to ask any
questions.
