From the 1840s, and more widely from the 1850s, photography was introduced in Asia,in the wake of Western conquests. It is initially practiced by European operators who will then transmit his technique and train local operators.

It will be necessary to wait until the 1970s, and a certain distance, for historians to be interested in it and give it back its place in the world history of photography.

This book, the first in the French language, provides an exceptional panorama of photography in Asia in the nineteenth century, and its spread from west to east, from Afghanistan, India, Ceylon and Burma, through the Siam, Cambodia, Cochin China, Annam, Tonkin, then Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, as far as China, Japan and Korea.

Book published in co-edition with the Museum of Asian Arts - Guimet (MNAAG).
