LCD Wine Thermometer

This is a simple device - all you do is clip it around your bottle of wine and wait for the LCD to light up to tell you the temperature. You can then check that against the recommended temperature for that particular type of wine.

There are lots of different wine types shown, each with a "best" range:

  • Sweet white dessert wine e.g. Sauternes
  • Sparkling wine e.g. Prosecco
  • Champagne
  • Dry white wine, dry sherry
  • Light red wine & rosé
  • Cotes du Rhone & Madeira (does anyone still drink that?)
  • Chianti, Red Burgundy & sweet sherry
  • Port
  • Red Bordeaux
  • Claret

Of course, a lot of New World wines are bought by their grape variety rather than their original region so you'll need to have a quick look on Wikipedia if you're not sure. For instance, if you like a Shiraz then you'd match that with the Cotes du Rhone temperature.

Either way, it's a quick and easy way to check that your wine is at its best.

Of course, your wine needs to be brought roughly the right temperature. Ideally gently. Not like my old college lecturer used to do by resting the bottle of red plonk on a radiator for a while. Or the other way of cheating that involves putting the white wine in the freezer because you're running short of the chilled version at your party. Wine purists wouldn't agree with either of those approaches!

This stainless steel collar is handy to use and wipes clean if you do dribble some wine onto it.

The colours light up as appropriate - no batteries or anything else to go wrong although it's not dishwasher safe and you do need to remember to take it off the bottle before you put out the recycling.
