For sale is one usedWooden Relief Sculpture of Boatman and Three Maidens with an Umbrella on Sampan.

Firstly, it must be stated that this is not fine art.  It appears to be the kind of collectible that might have been sold at a souvenir stand or at an Asian marketplace.  It clearly is the product of mass production for such a market.  It seems to imitate the style of finer pieces that are generally made from 'more exotic materials'.  From a distance, it looks quite attractive; but on closer inspection it can be seen that only the necessary details were made.  There is running of the varnish and occasional bit of sealed debris.  To be clear, this would not have been considered a valuable piece when it was made.  However, what makes it so interesting now is that it's become such an uncommon kind of product.  These days, such sculptures are simply cast in resin.  Even though it was not well-made, it was nevertheless handmade, and is rather old.  Unfortunately, I do not know the origin and won't presume to date it.  I was told by the person I acquired it from that the man who owned it, now passed on, had spent some time in the Philippines, and it's very possible it was acquired there, though not necessarily, and not necessarily where it was actually made.

It is a shame that more work was not put into it, as there is surprising detail and yet lack thereof, and a little more care could have made a very lovely piece.  Even so, like most art, it still looks attractive at the right distance, and would make a nice display on a mantle or similar location.

The condition is actually quite good, that is to say, intact as it was originally created.  There is no damage to speak of, the most obvious being a little chipping at the very edge of the boat, which is not even visible from the angle the relief is intended to be viewed.

Again, this was never fine art.  But given its uniqueness, it might have a place for the collector or person who recognizes this type of work.
