James M. Hunt, of Elizabeth City Country, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, late Master of Transportation and Superintendent of Vessels in the Quartermaster’s Department, of the Department of Virginia, being an employee of the United States in the discharge of his duties by the appointment and the authority of the Assistant Quartermaster of the Army of the United States, was charged with contriving and implementing unlawfull, willfull and corrupt schemes for his own profit at the expense of the good order and military discipline of the Army. Hunt was accused of accepting money as extortion, bribes and other means from masters, owners, stockholders of certain steamers, tugs, schooners, barges and other transport vessels and merchants of goods in exchange as a bribes and rewards to influence and prejudice him to use and exercise his official power to obtain and secure such business. This original, 1864, Civil War order is in excellent overall condition. The booklet consists of 11, loose pages protected in a clear, archival sleeve. The booklet is generally clean, but has some smudging to the cover. The interior pages are clean and in excellent condition with no writing, smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboards or other markings. The front cover has light chipping to the corners. A rare, official General Orders and trial record from the Civil War.
