Chinese Late Qing @1900 White Soapstone Foliage & Bird Temple Form Figure w/base

Rare old soapstone carving from about 1900 with lots of late Qing dynasty designs. This piece has a four legged base. The design on the front rises from the base depicting a standing bird surrounded by stones, flowers and foliage. The back of the piece is carved to look like a stone cliff. The designs are topped with a ribbed bulb form. The top of this piece, which sit in the top, is missing but does not detract from the beauty of the piece. Comes with a black lacquer base with foliage design on the edge. This is one of the older pieces of soapstone I have handled.

This soapstone piece shows its age. Soapstone is soft, particularly white soapstone, and scratches easily. This piece is covered in little dings and scratches as would be expected on a piece 120 years old. The intricate design is still intact and not broken. As mentioned above there was a top piece that just sit on the top and was probably a pinnacle to the tower form. Please study the photographs, they are part of the description.

This in an outstanding and old soapstone piece. Wonderful artistic design.
