What's on this DVD: Guadalcanal, The Island of Death

This DVD is a collection of RARE footage on Guadalcanal: "The Island of Death" by the Japanese.  It was one of the most important battles of WW2 in the Pacific.  After the Victory at Midway Island in June of 1942, the Americans noticed that the Japanese were building an airbase on Guadalcanal and realized that it would be a staging platform to take Australia.  The Americans preempted their training of green troops and the USMC invaded Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942. The USMC troops landed first, followed by the US Army landing on the 13th. Short on ammo and equipment, the American's fought wave after wave of Japanese attacks. The island was about 90 miles long and 40 miles wide, and was like “Hell on Earth”.  Hot, wet, mosquitoes every where… It is an Island one soldier said: "is the damndest island on the Earth”, “It is the only place where you can be knee deep in mud and have dust blow in your face". The Japanese Army thought they could easily get rid of the American's (because Americans were considered Wimps), so they made their first attack with only 4,000 troops. They lost after a very bloody battle. This went on for 6 months and in the end, the Japanese lost 23,000 men and thus called it the "Island of Death" and had to give up.

1st Film: "Guadalcanal: The Island of Death". This is a film produced by public funds and is public domain. We worked hard to restore the basic color and is a very important piece of history of that epic battle. The story telling is very accurate with some interviews of men and local people that were in the fight.  Amazing stuff. Old and new footage, this is well worth seeing. Runtime 52:00 Min's

2nd Film: "Guadalcanal".  This is a film produced by NBC called Victory at Sea.  This was the 5th episode of that series, and is of course, all about Guadalcanal.  This is some of the best story telling in all of TV history. Riveting in it's content about the ongoing fight in the pacific during WW2. It is a must see. Runtime 26:28 Min's

3rd Film: "Seabees on Guadalcanal". This film is about the Seabees on Guadalcanal. 4 days after the Marines landed, they finished the airbase that the Japanese started and they did much of the work with captured Japanese equipment. "Can DO" was their motto and can do they did. Great stuff. Runtime 12:48 Min's

4th Film: "Pacific War Newsreels".  This is a small collection of newsreels on the fight in the Pacific. 1st - Marines on Guadalcanal, 2nd - Meet a Marine from Guadalcanal, 3rd - USN fights the Tokyo Express of off Guadalcanal, 4th - Japanese ships smashed at Guadalcanal, 5th - Henderson Field, Guadalcanal Airport, 5th - Captured Japanese soldiers, 6th - Victory Garden at Guadalcanal, 7th - Adm.
