Brand new LNER (London And North Eastern Railway) Six-Coupled Tank Locomotives 1948-68, written by Eric Sawford, published by Sutton Publishing, 2006. 1st Edition with dustjacket. It's packed full of black and white photographs throughout.
About this book: Whilst never in the limelight, the numerous classes of six-coupled tank locomotives included those used on shunting work, also engines principally employed on secondary, cross-country and local passenger services. These included the Gresley 2-6-2Ts of VI and V3, and the LNER 1 class 2-6-4-T introduced in 1945. Two of the most interesting classes were the A8s, rebuilds of a 1913 4-4-4T design, and the A5 4-6-2Ts, first introduced by the Great Central. In the 1950s, visitors to King's Cross and Liverpool Street Station would invariably have seen N2 0-6-2Ts (at the former) and N7 0-6-2Ts (at the latter), both having worked suburban services, empty stock and performing other duties. The 0-6-0T engines were the most numerous, with classes originating from several pre-grouping railways. Among these were distinctive short-wheelbase tanks and the J70 Great Eastern Tram locomotives. Between 1948, when the LNER became British Railways Eastern Region, and the end of steam in 1968, author and photographer Eric Sawford captured on film not only the popular passenger services, but also locomotives which quietly went about their business on local services and shunting duties. As well as illustrating the engines, the author also includes a brief history of each class. LNER Six-Coupled Tank Locomotives 1948-68 shows the wide range of motive power to be seen at the time and is a superb companion to Eric Sawford's previous volume LNER Six-Coupled Tender Locomotives 1948-68
