SILVER PLATED PAIR OF CRUET STANDS AND THREE SALT/PEPPER SHAKERS ELKINGTON
& CO AND WALKER & HALL FOR BIBBY LINE 1948 Offered is a vintage lot of a pair of silver plated
cruet stands and three silver plated salt/pepper shakers. The pair of cruet
stands is by Elkington & Co, a famous silver manufacturer from Birmingham,
England. The two salt/pepper shakers are by Walker & Hall, a well-known silver
manufacturer originally from Sheffield, England and the third salt/pepper
shaker is by Elkington & Co. They are all made for Bibby Line. Bibby Line is
a British shipping line founded in 1807 by the first John Bibby (1775–1840). It
has operated in most areas of shipping throughout its 200-year history, and
claims to be the oldest independently owned deep sea shipping line in the
world. The pair of cruet stands weigh together 572 grams (20.2
oz.) and each measures 22 cm (8.7 in.) tall X 13.5 cm (5.3 in.) wide X 6 cm (2.4
in.) deep. They are both marked at the bottom with the Elkington & Co logo
and the capital letter “M” which was used in 1948 (pictured). The three salt/pepper
shakers weigh together 372 grams (13.1 oz.) and each measures 7 cm (2.8 in.)
tall X 5 cm (2.0 in.) wide at the base. Two are marked at the bottom with the Walker
& Hall logo and the capital letters “U” and “T” (pictured). Capital letters
A-Z were used by Walker & Hall c. 1930 - c. 1950. The third salt/pepper
shaker is marked with the letter “D”, which was used by Elkington & Co in
1915, with the rest of the Elkington & Co logo most likely faded (pictured).

Line The Bibby Line was founded in 1807 by the first John
Bibby (1775–1840). It has operated in most areas of shipping throughout its
200-year history, and claims to be the oldest independently owned deep sea
shipping line in the world. Along with other British ship owners, it endured
hard economic conditions in the 1970s and 1980s, but survived through
diversification into floating accommodation.
The group diversified in the 1980s into separate
divisions, including Bibby Financial Services which was formed in 1982. The
parent company is now called Bibby Line Group - a £1billion global business,
operating in 16 countries, employing 4,000 people in sectors including retail,
financial services, distribution, shipping, marine and construction equipment
hire.
