What Length Do You Need?
Chains are sold based on the cutting length of the chainsaw guide bar. So when you're buying a 16-inch chain, the 16 inches is referring to the length of the bar, this is not the actual length of the chain.

A lot of the energy gets dissipated by the saw chain, acting as a shock absorber. It never reaches the guide bar, the saw - or most important - the operator.
