Ets. J.Gauthier - Ezan

A beautiful pair of French art deco wall sconces around 1930-35. Polished solid brass mounts hold leaf shaped slip shades in molded-pressed glass. The shades have a frosted structured surface giving them a vivid appearance, with gold enameled highlights. The shades are signed Ezan france. Ezan for the large glass manufactory of Jean Gauthier in the town of Ezanville a little north of Paris. In the 30s it became well-known for its glassware in bluish opalescent semi-crystal like we can often see on for instance Charles Ranc or Hubert Petitot chandeliers of the mid-thirties.

The wall lights are in excellent condition. I have cleaned and polished the brass mounts. The sconces come rewired. For the US I have wired them with American candelabra base sockets. For European countries I will place E14 ones.  The shades are without chips or cracks. As always there is some wear of the gold enamel on the glass-surface, see pictures. The sconces are about 33 cm high (13") and 21 cm wide (8-1/4").

Free worldwide shipping. The sconces will be shipped with full insurance by priority mail.Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the streetname of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
