George Switzer Art Deco Machine Age Aluminum Inlaid Bakelite Bar Tray

This is an original 1932 Art Deco "Nocturne" Pattern Tray designed by George Switzer for  Westinghouse.

Its aluminum body is inlaid with Micarta bands of red orange on either side of a black band which is, in turn, inlaid with a crescent moon and star floating above an abstract sailboat.

Micarta was an original formulation produced by Westinghouse in response to other phenolic materials such as Bakelite. It was made to withstand staining from alcohol, tobacco, and other substances. Thus the tray has maintained its rich colors and beautiful appearance.

An identical tray can be found on display in the Yale University Art Gallery.
