Luther Before the Diet of Worms" by Anton von Werner (1843–1915)

“As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory [also attested as 'into heaven'] springs”

Luther objected to this saying attributed to Johann Tetzel, a Dominican friar and papal commissioner for indulgences, was sent to Germany by the Roman Catholic Church who in 1516 to sell indulgences to raise money to rebuild St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Roman Catholic theology stated that faith alone, whether fiduciary or dogmatic, cannot justify man; justification rather depends only on such faith as is active in charity and good works (fides caritate formata). The benefits of good works could be obtained by donating money to the church.

This lead to Luther penning what became known as The Ninety-Five Theses which he handed to his bishop on 31 October 1517 and several years of debate and confrontation with the Papacy and Luther’s ultimate excommunicated by Pope Leo X on 3 January 1521,

The Edict of Worms was a decree issued on 25 May 1521 by Emperor Charles V, declaring Luther to be an obstinate heretic and banned the reading or possession of his writings.

However with Charles being so preoccupied with political and military concerns elsewhere and rising public support for Luther among the German people and protection of certain German princes in particular Prince Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, the Edict of Worms was never enforced in Germany.

Thus this allowed Luther to return to public life and became instrumental in disrupting the religious strength of the papacy and laying the groundwork for the Protestant Reformation.

Martin Luther, (November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany - February 18, 1546 in Eisleben) was a German monk, reformer and theologian. He became a priest in the order of the Augustinian hermits

who gave him a thorough Catholic education, which led him to become a professor at the University of Wittenberg.

In his 30s, he developed his own theological views on the authority of the church, the sacraments and on man and its relationship with God. He distanced himself from the church indulgence.

It gave rise to the Reformation and the Evangelical Lutheran churches. The Reformation began on October 31, 1517, with his theses against indulgences. It was not really a landmark theological

breach, but a few years later they led to an irrevocable breach.

In 1521, Luther became outlawed and sought refuge with the benevolent and powerful prince of the castle of Wartburg. Problems with the razor of churches caused him to return to Wittenberg.

His movement suffered setbacks in the context of the German peasant war and knew that it was divided by conflicting theological views, especially in the view of the Holy Spirit and the sacraments.

Luther's translation of the Bible became of great importance to the German language. His hymnal song with Our God he is so firmly a castle inspired a flowering of Christian congregation singing,

where now no longer should be sung in Latin but in the native language. His marriage to former nun Katharina von Bora gave the priesthood legitimacy within several Christian traditions. Luther's reformation disrupted ecclesiastical unity in Western Europe and Northern Europe, and also had major and lasting political and cultural changes.

 Philipp Melanchthon

Philipp Melanchthon was one of the most influential theologians of the Reformation of the 16th century. He was responsible for transforming the secondary and tertiary educational systems in Germany. He was responsible for a new theological curriculum. He wrote the first Protestant 'systematic theology' and was the author of the Confessio Augustana. He is called the 'teacher of Germany and Europe'.

“God has always preserved a proportion of His servants upon the earth, and now, through Martin Luther, a more splendid period of light and truth has appeared.” (On the death of Luther, 1)

“If it please Christ, Melanchthon will make many Martins and a most powerful enemy of scholastic theology; for he knows their folly and the Rock of Christ as well.  As a man of might, he will prove his ability.” (What Luther Says, 919)
