This is a rare morality pitcher dating to 1835.  The first scene shows two groups of men and women in a tavern or inn.  One of the women is pouring a drink into the man’s tankard.  There is another man lighting his pipe standing in front of a large open fireplace with a dog at his feet watching him.  The clock in the room shows the time as 20 minutes to midnight.  The second scene on the side of the pitcher shows one of the revelers on horseback being chased by female spirits.  The pitcher measures 8” in height and is a mustard color.  The pitcher is in perfect condition with no damage or repairs and rings like a bell when you tap the rim. The underside is impressed “Published by W. RIDGWAY & Co.  BANLEY October 1, 1835.”  The term “Published by” refers to the Sculpture Act of 1797 giving potters’ exclusive rights to their creative pottery designs.  This pitcher is finely molded with the raised relief figures illustrating the morality story.
