wall sconces by Ad. Bloch & Ets. J.Gauthier

A nice pair of authentic 1925-1930 French art deco wall lights in nickel plated solid brass holding two beautiful slip shades in frosted molded-pressed glass. The sconces were made by Adolphe Bloch. A Paris based (7-9 Cité Popincourt) company producing art deco lighting during the interbellum. In an old Bloch catalog the sconces are represented with several different models slip shades all made by EJG as the ones on the pair on offer. The shades were acid frosted and then polished by hand to create glossy highlights. Both are signed EJG (for Etablissement Jean Gauthier). The sconces are 33 cm high (13") 18,8 cm wide and 11 cm deep. They are in excellent condition. I have re-nickeled and patinated the fixtures. The last photo shows the mounts prior to plating. The usual small chips on the rim where the shades glide in the mounts. Of course invisible with the shades in place. One of the shades has a small chip on the inside, see picture. The lamps come rewired. For the States Canada or Japan I placed US candelabra base sockets. For European countries I will place E14 ones.

At the moment I have a matching starburst chandelier listed in one of my other auctions.

Free worldwide shipping. The sconces will be shipped with full insurance by priority mail.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J. Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
