Festival of Women 1957, sponsor’s badge

A fund raising badge issued for the Festival of Women 1957. It shows an image of the Greek Goddess Athena who was the patron of wisdom, skills, arts and industry, a most appropriate symbol for the exhibition.

This three-week festival was held at Wembley from the 7th to the 29th June 1957. It was a showcase exhibition for training and employment opportunities available to women. There was also a strong emphasis on attracting women to take up careers in industry, engineering, science and medicine.

Here are two varieties of the badge – one with a silver-coloured plating and the other with a bronzed finish. Each badge was made from die-stamped brass with blue enamel and a pin clasp on the reverse, but no maker’s name or mark. Both are the same size at 11/16” across x 13/16” down (about 17mm x 21mm).
