The 2019 version of the
Native American Coin and Currency set not only has a great story behind it but
includes a special finished coin. The $1
Series 2017 note features a serial number beginning with “1959” to correspond to
the launch year of the Atlas-Agena spacecraft shown on the coin. The coin reverse design highlights the contributions
of Native Americans to the U.S. Space Program.
Mary Golda Ross (Cherokee) was one of the first female American Indians
engineers and she helped to develop the Agena spacecraft for the Gemini and
Apollo Programs. Astronaut John Herrington
(Chickasaw) completed three spacewalks on the International Space Station in
2002.
