This listing is for a very unique, hand-made sterling silver pendant, designed for Civil War relic hunters, metal detecting enthusiasts and history buffs in-general. My name is Leonard Short and I have combined my two careers of goldsmith/jewelry designer and artifact restoration to create a line of metal detecting jewelry. This pendant is a precision replica, modeled from a Civil War era State of MARYLAND Coat of Arms button (Alberts MD 11/ Tice MD 200B)that was worn during the American Civil War by MARYLAND troops!

THIS PENDANT IS NOT AN ACTUAL CIVIL WAR PERIOD ARTIFACT!!

This particular style of MARYLAND militia button was manufactured by the Waterbury Button Company in Waterbury Connecticut during the Civil War and 1860s. The buttons were produced until after the War, but the wartime buttons can be verified with the proper back mark. Maryland was designated as one of five border States during the American Civil War, meaning the State was torn between sympathizers for the Union, as well as for the Confederacy. The Federal government placed a heavy military presence in Maryland because of its proximity to Washington D.C. and fear that the State could be cut off from the other Northern States. The North mustered four Maryland regiments to defend the Union and loyalists to the Confederacy enlisted into the First Maryland regiment at Harpers Ferry and Richmond. Relic hunters treasure Maryland buttons, as they are quite scarce and a highlight of any Civil War Burton collection.

The button's design incorporates the State's coat of arms, which is from the modified seal of the Lords Baltimore. Central to the Coat of Arms is a shield embossed with the quartered arms of Calvert and Crossland (Calvert was the surname of the founder of the Maryland Colony and Calvert was his mother’s maiden name). Above the shield is an eagle with wings spread. On a ribbon beneath the shield is the Latin motto of Maryland: Crescite et Multiplicimini , which translates as “increase and multiply”. Along the sides of the shield are a farmer to the left and a fisherman to the right. Beneath the ribbon is the word “MARYLAND” in bold, all capital letters. The entire Coat of Arms design is superimposed on a lined background.

All details of this button's design are sharp and crisp in the execution of the silver pendant replica. The bail on this pendant is uniquely crafted with long-term wear in mind. It has an opening that measures 3mm x 6mm in order to accommodate a very substantial chain. In addition, the bail has my signature, hinge mechanism.

If you are in need of a nice sterling silver chain on which to wear the pendant, please check out my other listings. My recommended chain style for my pendant line is a 2.5 mm diameter sterling silver wheat style chain. I have three listings: one for a 24”, one for a 20" wheat and one for an 18".

This is a unique pendant design that you will not find anywhere else!
