"The Ratz" by Simon Adorian and Cecily O'Neill, published in 1991 in Great Britain in paperback by Collins Educational, 92pp, ISBN 0003303012

Condition Notes: Good condition 1991 paperback with a different (original) cover to the one shown on the Amazon product listing. It's clean & tidy internally and externally, but it does have a very vintage look and style about it. The cover edges and corners are slightly creased and rubbed; and there is some light creasing to the top and bottom of the back cover. The spine is slightly sunned (faded). The book remains in very decent condition with plenty of life left in it.

About this book: The Ratz is based on the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, but places the same dilemmas in a more contemporary context. The play arose out of a series of drama workshops involving pupils, parents and friends of St. Leonard's School in Dorset. Through role-play and improvisation, the actors developed the characters and the action of every scene in the play - and a few outside it! The reader can use the play text and the accompanying extension material in a number of ways. Some ideas are: 1. Read the play text and use the script and extension material as a lead-in to workshops in drama 2. Work towards a group production of the play. Build in ideas and scenes arising from the work on the extension material. Share some of the work informally with other groups, or in a school assembly 3. Extend the group work into a more ambitious production involving an extended cast.

Roles:
HAMELIN TOWN COUNCIL: Henry Stott-Stickland, Lord Mayor; Councillor Witham; Councillor Fitzpatrick; Councillor Miss Worthington; Councillor Mrs Phipp; Councillor Mrs. Grahame; Councillor Ms. Fortune

CITIZENS OF HAMELIN: All ranks and professions are represented among the Citizens, e.g. a nurse, a vicar, a bus driver, a shop manager, a lawyer, etc. The Citizens can be placed among the audience!

CHILDREN OF HAMELIN: James, Jenny, Paul, Kate, Kevin, Lorna, Jo, Becky; and Jan, who has a disability (he has never been able to run and play with the other children)

THE RATZ: A subculture from the long neglected East side of town. In recent weeks, gangs of Ratz have raided the respectable centre of Hamelin. Ratz speak a dialect of their own, completely meaningless to ordinary citizens. In production, Ratz will need to develop tribal rituals and their own range of sounds, shouts, street slang, whistles, posturing, etc.

THE STRANGER: No name, no roots, no allies. No-one is even certain if the Stranger is male, or female
