Herend

Niang / Nanking Bouquet Raspberry

Onion Neck Bud Vase

Being offered on this auction is decorative bud vase made by Herend, Hungary. This is a part of most popular Nanking Bouquet collection. Other name of this pattern is ‘Niang’. This Herend pattern in Oriental style was introduced in the early part of the 20th century. It features Chinese peony just coming into bloom, its stem surrounded by other garden flowers. There were six different colors of peony made in this pattern. This vase is in Raspberry - Nanking Bouquet Pourpre (NBP). It has white background and gold outline. There is also gilding on leafs and gold outlines on base. Vase has attractive shape of onion head with very long neck. The motif of a Chinese peony arrived in Hungary long ago, via the Turks. It became a garden favorite in the 16th century to such an extent that it was often copied onto the rural homes. Other Central European peoples were also enamored of the Chinese peony, so that it is not surprising to discover that King Boris of Bulgaria chose Nanking Bouquet when he ordered a Herend service in the early 20th century. The backside is marked with standard Herend blue mark used since 1949.  Other marking is mold number 7105/NBP and 7 written in blue, 16 in red as well as ‘Herend’, 7105 and 74 incised on the backside.

Vase measures about 2 ¾” in diameter and stands 5 ¼” tall. Condition is immaculate with no cracks or chips found. Colors are bright and vibrant. Gold has no wear. Please take a look at the pictures to find out more about this item.
