Pioneered in 1822 by William Becknell, the Santa Fe Trail was America's first great commercial highway. Extending nearly 1200 miles across five states, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico, the Santa Fe Trail promoted trade between Missouri and the Mexican frontiers until the arrival of the railroad in Santa Fe in 1880.
