It is one of the first successes of Emmanuel Frémiet.

"Ours wounded, 1850 plaster group also called Ours and retiarius, Gladiator and bear Susse edition, posthumous ?; was not edited by Frémiet, More, or Barbedienne.
Salon 1850, n ° 3399, plaster
terracotta copy, private collection.
Bronze copy, former B. Fauré-Frémiet collection, h: 0.28, Susse cast, current location unknown.
Original work destroyed in the fire at the Crystal Palace in New York, 1853 (1891 BARTLETT n ° 790, p. 103; n ° 798, p.27) "
This bronze copy corresponds to the description of the single copy from Susse published following the creation of the Work exhibited at the 1850 salon.
It seems to have been kept by the descendants of Emmanuel Frémiet in the Fauré-Frémiet collection.
The "Susse Fres" stamp identifies precisely this period of the 1850s (p.314 Barye, catalog raisonné Richarme and Poletti).
The fineness of carving and details of the copy suggest that the artist reworked the original plaster exhibited in 1850, before entrusting it to the bronzier to melt a proof.
This will place the cast of this specimen before 1853 and the destruction of the original plaster in New York.
The Susse house in 1830 was raised as Suppliers to Queen Marie-Amélie, the wife of King Louis-Philippe, and Princess Louise, their daughter - who married King Leopold I of the Belgians in 1832 - then in 1847 to that of Suppliers of the Duke of Montpensier.
Susse editions from this period are rare and of admirable quality.
Very rare bronze, with its original knife.
