An extremely rare mid-19th century Daghestan kilim from the Caucuses. In fine condition.
"Rows of diamond-contoured “boteh” paisleys, colored in rose-madder, green, ivory, and gold are drawn against the deep indigo ground of this rustic kilim from Daghestan. This palette is reminiscent of other north Caucasian kilim groups, particularly those attributed as Avar. While botehs are generally associated with finer textile patterns, they seem perfectly at home in this bold geometric composition. This piece is framed with a central border made up of stepped geometric forms on a white ground. The ground is flanked on both sides by reciprocal pendants."
