Antique/Vintage Majolica
Artichoke Plate with built-in Dip Cup

This exquisite, unique piece of Majolica ware, was recently found at the liquidation auction of a local estate, as part of a large, eclectic collection of items collected by the owner, who travelled the world in the 40's 50's and 60's. Like many Majolica pieces this plate was designed to imitate the type of food it was meant for. In this case it was designed for serving artichoke, with the plate and attached dip cup crafted with the dark green, overlapping pattern of an artichoke, with reddish-brown at the tips of the petals similar to that of a ripe artichoke. While it would probably be best to display this fine piece of old world craftsmanship, it could be used for serving artichokes, chips with salsa or any food served with a dip.

The plate measures approximately 8" (eight inches) in diameter and rises about 1" (one inch) from the base to the upturned edges. The attached dip cup measures approximately 2 1/2" (two and one half inches in diameter and height. The only hallmark we could find were the words "MADE IN ITALY" stamped in black on the underside of the plate (the black lettering was slightly smeared during the firing of the glaze). The plate has no apparent chips, cracks or repairs. Some crazing (crackling effect) is visible most easily seen in the clear glaze on the underside, but we cannot find any open cracks. Due to the pandemic, the Governor of Hawaii has issued another Stay-At-Home Order for all residents except essential services, and a mandatory 14-day quarantine of all visitors to Hawaii from the mainland and outside the US, effective until further notice. For the duration of the stay-at-home order, I cannot guarantee shipping the next business day. I will be limiting my trips to the post office downtown to once a week, possibly less depending on how the situation with the virus develops. I will ship items as quickly as the circumstances allow.

We do offer combined shipping - unless otherwise requested by the buyer, we will pack and ship all items purchased and paid for by the same buyer with the same delivery address. If you want combined shipping ignore the "Pay Now" notice that is sent out at the close of each auction. Once all of my auctions scheduled to end that day have finished, I will pack the items and issue a corrected invoice for combined shipping. Wait until you receive an invoice that begins with "Here is your corrected invoice..." in the comments section. If a buyer pays before the corrected invoice is issued and the shipping and handling charges of the combined shipping are less than the amount paid, a refund will be issued through PayPal once the postage has been printed and the package shipped.
