Carnation is a perennial plant but is grown as an annual plant. Dianthus Caryophyllus can grow to 24 inches tall and has green slender leaves 6 inches long. The Carnations has a flower that is 3-5 cm in width and has a sweet fragrance. The flowers are usually pink, red, yellow, white, blue and green. Dianthus caryophyllus blooms from summer to fall and also in winter depending on the frost. Carnation attracts bees and butterflies to your garden due to the sweet fragrance. Dianthus caryophyllus prefers well drained soil and full sun for the best results. Carnation seeds are perfect to grow in the cutting garden. There is no better known flower for cutting than a Carnation. Dianthus caryophyllus can be grown in borders, planters and rock gardens. SOWING Season: PERENNIAL Sow: March - May Height: 50-60cm (17-20 inches) Bloom Season: summer and fall Environment: Full sun Soil Type: Any soils that are not too dry, pH 5.8 - 6.8 Temperature: 21C (70F) Average Germ Time: 7 - 30 days Depth: Do not cover the seed but press into the soil Plant Spacing: 30cm (12 - 15 inches) Sow seed on the surface of good, free-draining, seed compost. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place container in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and place at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination which usually takes 7-21 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatize plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart. Other our products |
