Lee Lukather (born October 21, 1957) is an American guitarist, singer,
songwriter, arranger and record producer, best known as the sole
continuous founding member of the rock band Toto from its founding in
1976 to its latest hiatus in 2019. A prolific session musician, Lukather
has recorded guitar tracks for more than 1,500 albums representing a
broad array of artists and genres. He has also contributed to albums and
hit singles as a songwriter, arranger and producer. Most notably,
Lukather played guitar on Boz Scaggs' albums Down Two Then Left (1977)
and Middle Man (1980)[1], and was a prominent contributor to several
studio albums by Michael Jackson, including Thriller (1982). Lukather
has released seven solo albums, the latest of which, Transition, was
released in January 2013.
In 1976, when Lukather was nineteen years
old, he was invited by his high school friends David Paich and the
Porcaro brothers Steve and Jeff to join them in forming their band,
Toto. He remained a member of the band throughout its entire history, in
latter years serving as its manager, musical director, and live emcee.
Lukather's reputation as a guitarist and his association with Paich and
the Porcaro brothers, who also became established artists in their own
rights, allowed him to secure a steady flow of session work in the 1970s
and 1980s. Lukather has been nominated for twelve Grammy Awards, and
has won five. While his work with Toto was predominantly based on pop
rock music and his solo work ventures into progressive rock and hard
rock, many of Lukather's side-projects are focused on jazz fusion. He
held a long-time collaboration with jazz guitarist Larry Carlton that
produced a Grammy-winning live album, and he was a member of the jazz
fusion band Los Lobotomys, a collaboration of prominent session
musicians. Since 2012, Lukather has toured with former Beatles drummer
Ringo Starr's live supergroup, the All-Starr Band.
Influenced by such
blues-rock guitarists as Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, and such jazz
fusion players as Al Di Meola and Frank Gambale, Lukather is known for a
"melodic and intense" playing style. He is also recognized for his
efficiency in the studio, often recording tracks in one take using
minimal sound processing. While he once used many guitar effects in the
studio and on stage, he now frequently disparages such practice, and
instead advocates clean tones and minimal studio processing. Lukather
plays primarily a signature electric guitar manufactured by Ernie Ball
Music Man bearing his nickname, Luke. He also plays Yamaha and Ovation
Adamas series acoustic–electric guitars.

Early life
Steven
Lee Lukather was born on October 21, 1957, in the San Fernando Valley,
California. He first played keyboards and drums, and then taught himself
how to play the guitar starting at age seven, when his father bought
him a Kay acoustic guitar and a copy of the Beatles album Meet the
Beatles. Lukather has said that the album "changed his life" and that he
was greatly influenced by the guitar playing of George Harrison in
particular.[2][3]
At Grant High School,[4] Lukather met David Paich
and the Porcaro brothers (Jeff, Steve, and Mike),[5] all of whom
eventually became members of Toto. Lukather, who had been a self-taught
musician, began taking guitar lessons from Jimmy Wyble. With Wyble,
Lukather expanded his knowledge of wider aspects of music, including
orchestration. It was during this period in the early 1970s that
Lukather became interested in the idea of becoming a session musician, a
vocation that provided opportunities to play with a variety of famous
musicians.[2]
Jeff Porcaro, who had been playing drums with Steely
Dan since 1973,[6] became a mentor to Lukather and furthered his
interest in session work. Lukather's first job in the music industry was
studio work with Boz Scaggs,[7] after which Paich and Jeff Porcaro—who
had become prominent session musicians in their own right[8]—asked
Lukather to join them in forming Toto in 1976 along with Bobby Kimball,
David Hungate, and Steve Porcaro.[2]
Lukather is the original lead
guitarist for Toto, serving in that capacity for the band's entire
history, as well as a lead and backing vocalist and composer. Lukather
won three of his five Grammy Awards for work with Toto, twice as an
artist and once as a producer.[9] David Paich led the band's songwriting
efforts during the development of 1978's Toto—he penned all but two of
the album's tracks, including all four of its singles. Lukather also
credits Jeff Porcaro for his leadership within the band during that
period. However, Lukather's role in Toto evolved over time owing to the
changing needs of the band. In August 1992, Jeff Porcaro collapsed while
doing yard work at home and subsequently died of heart failure.[10] The
death profoundly affected Toto and Lukather in particular, who felt
that he needed to step up and make sure the band kept going. Thus, he
began taking more of a leadership role.[2]
Lukather crouches on stage and intently plays the neck of a black Ernie Ball Music Man "Luke" electric guitar.
Lukather solo with Toto
Toto
went through several lead vocalists over the years, including Bobby
Kimball, Fergie Frederiksen, and Joseph Williams. After the 1990
dismissal of their fourth vocalist, Jean-Michel Byron, Toto was without a
lead singer until around 1997; Lukather assumed most of the vocal
duties for the band during that time. He performed lead vocals for every
track on 1992's Kingdom of Desire and 1995's Tambu except for two
instrumental tracks. The Tambu single "I Will Remember", co-written by
Lukather and Stan Lynch, reached number 64 on UK charts.[2] Some Tambu
reviewers contrasted Lukather's vocals with those of former singers
Kimball and Williams (and indeed, heavily criticized the entire
album),[11] some concert reviewers noted that he struggled vocally on
certain songs, and a number of backup singers and guest vocalists
accompanied the band's live shows during that period.[12] It was not
until Toto brought back Williams and Kimball to collaborate on 1998's
Toto XX that Lukather returned predominantly to the role of backup
vocalist.[2]
Lukather's songwriting contributions grew from a
smattering of tracks on early Toto albums to co-writing almost every
track starting in the late 1980s. Lukather admitted that the reason why
he has no songwriting contributions on the first two Toto albums was
that he wasn't writing many songs at the time, being intimidated by the
talent of the band's chief songwriter, David Paich. He credits Paich
himself with encouraging him to contribute more songs to the band.[13]
He wrote very few of Toto's songs by himself, an exception being the hit
single "I Won't Hold You Back" from Toto IV. Lukather has said that
writing lyrics is not one of his strengths. Thus, he collaborated with
other band members to complete song ideas and make them into viable
album tracks. Lukather's official site claims he contributed to writing
all the songs on Toto's 2006 album Falling in Between,[14] even though
"Spiritual Man" officially credits Paich as the sole writer.
By 2008,
Lukather was the only remaining, original Toto member still performing
with the band: Bobby Kimball was also in the band at the time, but
earlier had been absent from it for some time – whereas Lukather has
been with Toto since its formation. However, in June of the same year,
Lukather decided to leave Toto.[15] This decision directly led to the
official dissolution of the band. In a 2011 interview discussing his
career with Toto, Lukather indicated that the band had evolved too far
from its original incarnation and that he was dealing with the physical
and mental toll of recording and performing.[16] In February 2010, the
band announced that they would reunite to support Toto bassist Mike
Porcaro, who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.[17] They continued
to tour on a limited basis in 2011 and 2012.[18]
Although Lukather
indicated in April 2011 that the band would not record any further
material,[16] Toto announced a heavy international tour schedule and new
studio album in March 2014.[19] In March 2015 Toto XIV was
released.[20] The band toured in celebration of its 40th anniversary
from 2016 to 2019, when Lukather announced an indefinite hiatus.
Session work
Lukather
achieved notability in the 1970s and 1980s as one of the most
sought-after session guitarists in Los Angeles,[21] playing with a wide
range of artists from Aretha Franklin to Warren Zevon.[21][22] He has
performed on over 1,500 records spanning 36 years.[16] Music journalist
Jude Gold noted, "It's hard to name a guitarist who has had a more
prolific and fulfilling career than Steve Lukather."[21] Lukather
credits fellow Toto members David Paich and Jeff Porcaro for getting him
exposure in the industry—although he lamented in an April 2011
interview that opportunities for session musicians have curtailed in
recent years: "There is no 'session guy' thing any more—not like it was.
It's not like the old days when I was doing 25 sessions a week. All the
studios are gone. The budgets are gone. The record companies are all
gone."[16] His own output as a session musician has slowed along with
the rest of the industry—as of 2009, Lukather stated he was doing only a
few sessions a year.[15]
Named by Gibson Guitar Corporation as one
of the Top 10 session guitarists of all time,[23] Lukather has performed
on many notable tracks. Other notable session performances include
Earth, Wind & Fire's Faces album soloing on the tracks "Back on the
Road" and "You Went Away",[5] two tracks from the Lionel Richie album
Can't Slow Down, and the Richard Marx album Repeat Offender.[24]
Lukather and Jeff Porcaro were heavily involved in the recording of
virtually all of Michael Jackson's Thriller.[5][15] In addition to
recording guitar tracks, Lukather has also written or produced music for
Lionel Richie, Richard Marx, Chicago, Donna Summer, and The
Tubes.[24][25] He won a Grammy award in 1982 for the George Benson song
"Turn Your Love Around" (co-written with Jay Graydon and Bill
Champlin).[9][25]

Lukather
has released seven solo studio albums: Lukather (1989), Candyman
(1994), Luke (1997), Santamental (2003), Ever Changing Times (2008),
All's Well That Ends Well (2010), and Transition (2013).[26][27][28]
1989–1997: Lukather, Candyman, and Luke
The
1989 album Lukather came about after Toto had been recording and
playing for 11 years, and the consensus among the band members was to
take a break. As Lukather had written a number of songs that did not
appear on Toto albums, he decided to pursue a solo album, with the
intention of presenting a dimension of his music that fans would be
unfamiliar with. He collaborated with many notable musicians, including
Eddie Van Halen, Richard Marx, Jan Hammer, Steve Stevens, and fellow
Toto members Jeff Porcaro and David Paich. Lukather has said that the
album was produced very simply, and that a lot of ambient studio
noise—counting off on various tracks, for instance—is audible on it. He
also credits bands Pink Floyd, Cream, Led Zeppelin, and guitarists Jimi
Hendrix, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton as influences on the
album. The single "Swear Your Love" came from the album.[29]
Candyman,
recorded and mastered from March 1993 through November 1993, was a
collaboration of musicians who were for the most part also in Lukather's
band Los Lobotomys.[30] Toto familiars Simon Phillips and David Paich
participated as well as David Garfield, John Peña, Chris Trujillo, Lenny
Castro, Larry Klimas, Fee Waybill, Richard Page, and Paul Rodgers.
Lukather recorded the album in mostly live takes with little
overdubbing.[31] Some international fans were confused about whether
Candyman was a Steve Lukather album or a Los Lobotomys album. The
Japanese and US releases of Candyman were under the Los Lobotomys name
rather than Lukather's; the Japanese release also featured a version of
the Hendrix song "Red House". The European release of Candyman was
credited to Lukather alone. Additionally, the touring band for the album
was sometimes introduced as "Steve Lukather and Los Lobotomys" and
sometimes as just "Los Lobotomys".[32] The song "Borrowed Time" was
released as a single in Europe and included "Red House" as a B-side.[31]
Lukather
describes 1997's Luke as a much different and more "introspective"
album than his previous two solo efforts. The album is a concentrated
collection of many of Lukather's musical influences, and he deliberately
let those influences come out on the album. Luke is an experimental
album, and like Candyman it was recorded mostly in live sessions with
minimal overdubbing and processing afterwards. Luke also features
instrumentation not heard on previous Lukather albums: pedal steel,
harmonicas, Mellotrons, and experimental guitar, bass, and drum sounds.
The US version of Luke includes a version of the Jeff Beck song "The
Pump". The song "Hate Everything About U" was released as a single.[33]
2003: Santamental
Lukather performing with Ringo Starr, 2016
Santamental,
released in October 2003,[34] is a collaborative project featuring
several prominent musicians such as guitarists Eddie Van Halen, Slash,
Steve Vai, and drummer Gregg Bissonette.[35] When Lukather's record
company, Bop City Records, approached him about recording a Christmas
album, he responded with a quip about his suitability for the project.
The company wanted him to do the record knowing he would approach the
project with a unique angle and produce something different from the
typical Christmas album. Lukather recruited keyboardist Jeff Babko and
guitarist Larry Carlton, who Lukather had worked with previously, to
help arrange the songs. The project was a challenge to Lukather, who had
to be creative to turn the traditionally simple songs into something
interesting for listeners without altering the fundamental structures.
He said of the album, "But I never dreamt in a million years that I'd do
a Christmas record."[21]
The musicians Lukather chose for
Santamental, most of whom were involved in the hard-rock genre, lent a
heavy feel to the album. Van Halen recorded guitar tracks for "Joy to
the World" after not having been in the studio for some time but
immediately made an impression on Lukather with his level of playing.
Vai provided guitar work for "Carol of the Bells" along with Lukather's
son Trevor, then 14 years old. Slash, who recorded his part in one take,
played on the Lukather/Stan Lynch composition "Broken Heart for
Christmas". Lukather spoke highly of Slash after the project, calling
him the "Keith Richards of our generation". Well-known session guitarist
Michael Landau played on the song "Look Out For Angels",[21] and there
is a version of "Jingle Bells" featuring a big band and sung by Sammy
Davis, Jr.[21] Santamental was recorded in six days, after which
Lukather proclaimed it "his first and last Christmas album".[36]
2008–present: Ever Changing Times, All's Well That Ends Well, and Transition
Ever
Changing Times, released on February 22, 2008, is a collection of songs
Lukather recorded in 2007 between Toto tours. The album contains
contributions from fellow session musicians Bill Champlin, Abe Laboriel,
Jr., Leland Sklar, Steve Porcaro, and many others. Lukather's son
Trevor contributed as well. Joseph Williams provides backing vocals on
five of the tracks. Lukather wrote the songs for the album in a hotel
room with his son and a handful of other musicians, using basic
equipment. His song-writing philosophy is that if a song sounds good
with only guitars and vocals, it will likely sound good after a full
production.[3] Lukather collaborated with Grammy Award-winning engineer
and producer Steve MacMillan on the project, with the goal of
introducing some new methods and techniques into the recording process.
Lukather described the final tracks as "perfectly imperfect", preferring
to record with the five-piece backing band in one room and in one take.
MacMillan encouraged Lukather to use "organic, vintage tones". As a
result, Lukather eschewed effects and played the guitar parts directly
through tube amplifiers manufactured by Marshall, Vox, and some boutique
brands. Lukather commented that MacMillan served as a valuable "second
set of ears" in the studio, often encouraging him to keep parts that he
normally would have discarded.[8] As Toto had recently disbanded when
Ever Changing Times was released, Lukather embarked on a solo tour to
promote the album. The shows featured a mixture of songs from the album,
songs written for other side projects, and "a few Toto
obscurities".[15]
Lukather's sixth studio album, All's Well That Ends
Well, was released on October 11, 2010, in Europe and Japan, and
November 16 as a digital download worldwide. The material was written
predominantly in collaboration with longtime associate C. J. Vanston,
and the album features stalwart musicians from Lukather's touring band.
Songwriter Randy Goodrum, who has collaborated with Lukather many times
over the years including on the 1986 Toto single "I'll Be over You",
contributes to the track "Brody's".[16] All's Well That Ends Well draws
from Lukather's personal experiences in the two years since Ever
Changing Times. Critic Arlene Weiss noted that the album features three
distinct flavors of music: one that "bares [Lukather's] soul and
emotional heartache", one that pans elements of popular culture like
TMZ.com, and one that expresses optimism and enthusiasm about the
future. While Lukather focused on instrumental writing and production on
previous albums but collaborated with lyricists, he wrote much of the
lyrics for All's Well That Ends Well himself.[25] Lukather describes the
album as being a "real" and "honest" reflection of the period between
2008 and 2010, when he experienced difficulties within his private
life.[16]
In December 2011, Lukather announced the beginning of work
on Transition. The album was produced with songwriter and record
producer C.J. Vanston and involved musicians Chad Smith, Gregg
Bissonette, Leland Sklar, Steve Weingart, and others. Throughout 2012,
Lukather released notes and news of the album development through his
web site. The title was announced on October 12, 2012.[27] The album was
released January 21, 2013.[28]
Side projects
Lukather and Joseph Williams performing with Toto, 2016
When
not working with Toto, Lukather has participated in numerous side
projects including playing with jazz fusion band Los Lobotomys and with
other session musicians, and touring with Larry Carlton, Joe Satriani,
Steve Vai, and others.
Lukather was a long-time member of the band
Los Lobotomys, a collaboration of session musicians including jazz and
be-bop player David "Creatchy" Garfield and Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro,
replaced after his death by Simon Phillips, who also replaced Porcaro in
Toto. Los Lobotomys formed in the mid-1980s and played regular shows in
the Los Angeles area, often inviting whatever session musicians
happened to be available and in the area. They recorded an album under
the Los Lobotomys name in 1989, and the band was heavily involved in the
recording of Lukather's Candyman.[30] Los Lobotomys recorded a live
album in 2004 comprising several tracks from Candyman and from the 1989
album.[37]
In 1998, Lukather received an invitation to tour Japan
with fellow guitarist Larry Carlton after Japanese promoters requested
that Carlton's annual tours each be different from the last. Lukather
and Carlton exchanged some recorded material and decided that a
collaboration would be interesting. Lukather was flattered by the
invitation to tour with Carlton, citing him as his favorite guitarist.
Lukather speaks highly of their stage efforts, although the two were
admittedly outside their normal realm of work. He stated in an interview
that "you can hear us having fun on the record—you can hear the smiles
on our faces."[38] After several shows, the duo realized that they
should record their collaboration even if just for their own use.
Guitarist and producer Steve Vai heard one of the subsequent recordings
and expressed interest in releasing it under his Favored Nations label,
also home to such artists as Eric Johnson and Dweezil Zappa. Vai and
Lukather mixed and produced the recording, which is said to be a mixture
of jazz, blues, and fusion music.[38] The resulting album, No
Substitutions: Live in Osaka, won a 2001 Grammy award for Best Pop
Instrumental Album.[9][39] Album reviewers described Lukather as having a
heavier style than Carlton.[40] Lukather and Carlton later did an
international tour in support of the album.[38]
In 2005, Lukather won
critical praise for his rendition of the Jimi Hendrix song "Little
Wing" at a gala 90th birthday celebration for jazz guitarist Les
Paul.[41] Returning after a five-year absence, the 2012 G3 Tour featured
Lukather alongside Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.[42]
In the autumn of
2006, Lukather contributed his cover-version of the Michael Landau-song
"I'm Buzzed" (originally from Landau's Tales From The Bulge album) from a
live recording of his side band project, El Grupo, to the album project
Artists for Charity – Guitarists 4 the Kids, produced by Slang
Productions, to assist World Vision Canada in helping underprivileged
kids in need.[43]
In February 2012, Ringo Starr announced that
Lukather would be the guitarist in his All Starr Band for their summer
tour. Lukather has been touring with that ensemble since that time,
performing three Toto songs ("Hold the Line," "Rosanna," and "Africa")
nightly.[44]
Lukather periodically contributes material and expertise
to instructional and educational enterprises. In 1985, he released the
instructional "Star Licks" guitar video featuring many of the guitar
parts from the first five Toto studio albums. It was released on DVD in
2005.[45] The guitarist has also been participating in the Fermatta
Master Class Series project, an educational cooperative organized by the
Fermatta Music Academy in Mexico.[46]
For the past several years,
Lukather has also performed with his side project Nerve Bundle at The
Baked Potato in Studio City, CA around Christmas time. The band also
features: Toss Panos on drums, Jeff Babko on keyboards and Jorgen
Carlsson on bass.[47]
Musical style and equipment
Lukather performing with Toto, 2017
Influenced
by such blues-rock guitarists as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix
and Jimmy Page, and such jazz fusion players as John McLaughlin, and Al
Di Meola, Lukather is known for a "melodic and intense" playing
style.[48] He has also cited Steely Dan as a major long-time
influence—one that emerges prominently in later solo work such as All's
Well That Ends Well.[49] Journalist Jude Gold notes that his vibrato is
very pronounced and his "exaggerated wide bends" are distinctive and
quickly recognizable. Well-versed in music theory, Lukather can follow
chord charts and changes in a way typical of jazz musicians—this ability
enhances his value as a session musician. In interviews, he has
explained how he thinks of the guitar in a "chordal cluster" format, and
not the typical "linear scale" format.[50]
Lukather's approach to
engineering his sound in the studio is usually simple. He is not known
for doing a large number of takes or for incorporating much
overdubbing—rather, he has a reputation for doing only single takes for
many parts.[51] He has said about this approach: "If a solo didn't
work—either because I didn't have the right sound, or because I wasn't
inspired at that moment—I'd just move on. A part either works or it
doesn't. You can't batter it into submission, or force inspiration to
save you. It's always better to just surrender, and then come back later
to give it a go with fresh ears."[8] Although he enjoys the technical
mastery that is possible in the studio, Lukather prefers the dynamic of
performing live on stage.[52] He has stated that dynamics are the most
important element of producing a recording with good sound quality.[53]
Despite
being known in the past for having an intricate set of effects units,
Lukather now says he plays mostly free of such modifications after
seeing some overdone commercial unit configurations named after him.[21]
Other than some delay, he has not used many effects in recent
years.[52] He has held a long association with Bob Bradshaw of Custom
Audio Electronics, who designed and manufactured key elements of
Lukather's effects rack. Lukather was one of the few official endorsers
of EMG pickups, having collaborated on his own Lukather signature "SL20"
pickup system, which is a single unit incorporating two single coils
and an EMG 85 humbucker. The system has a single volume and tone knob,
and a pickguard.[54] In December 2012, Lukather collaborated with
DiMarzio pickups on a new set of signature pickups called "Transition".
He has been using these pickups in his Music-Man Luke 3 guitar.[55]
Lukather
endorses Music Man guitars and has a signature model named "Luke" that
incorporated his signature EMG pickup system. The guitar started out
with only MusicMan specifications (including a Floyd Rose locking
vibrato, later replaced with a vintage-style fulcrum bridge), but in
1998, the manufacturer made several customizations to the model to
better fit Lukather's playing style.[56] Music Man also produces a Ball
Family Reserve Steve Lukather Model that features an alder body with a
mahogany "tone block" inlaid under the pickups, capped with a figured
maple top and transparent finish.[57] In 2012 a new version of the
guitar called the LIII was introduced with a 3% larger but similarly
contoured body, all-rosewood neck and passive pickup options (dual
humbucker or single-single-humbucker) combined with an active preamp and
12-dB boost activated from a push/push tone pot. the LIII model also
debuted Lukather's switch from EMG to custom DiMarzio "Transition" model
pickups. In 2013 Lukather changed to a roasted maple neck with a
rosewood fret board, citing the exceptional stability of roasted maple
while touring as a factor in his decision. As a result, the LIII
specification and production was changed to match Lukather's
preference.[58] Lukather has also been known to play Ibanez and Valley
Arts guitars. His relationship with Ibanez and Valley Arts yielded an
endorsement for a brief time in the 1980s with the release of the Ibanez
Roadstar RS1010SL and Valley Arts Custom Pro Steve Lukather Signature
guitars in 1984–85.[57] He has played Ovation Adamas series
acoustic–electric guitars.[59] Starting before his 2010 All's Well That
Ends Well tour, Lukather began playing and endorsing Yamaha Studio
Response Technology acoustic–electric guitars.[60]
Information about his current equipment can be found on Lukather's website, which is kept up-to-date.[61]

Best
known as the guitarist for early MTV-era hitmakers Toto, Steve Lukather
remains one of the world's top session men, having played on well over a
hundred recordings by a wide variety of artists over the years. Born in
Los Angeles, CA, on October 21, 1957, Lukather discovered rock music
the way just about every single other young U.S. citizen did during the
'60s -- via the Beatles. Starting off as a drummer and keyboardist, it
wasn't until his father purchased Lukather a guitar that he found his
true musical calling. At first self-taught, Lukather eventually sought
the help of older guitar-playing classmates, as well as a formal
teacher, which led to an interest in becoming a session guitarist
(courtesy of drummer Jeff Porcaro and keyboardist Steve Porcaro, both of
whom attended the same high school as Lukather). Right around the time
Lukather turned 20, the guitarist was invited to join the Porcaro
brothers in a pop/rock band comprised primarily of studio musicians,
Toto (which also featured singer Bobby Kimball, bassist David Hungate,
and keyboardist/singer David Paich). While Lukather would join the band,
he also managed to maintain his busy session schedule, playing on
albums by Leo Sayer, Boz Scaggs, Alice Cooper, Barbra Steisand, the
Pointer Sisters, Cher, and Cheap Trick during the late '70s.
Specializing in the same mainstream radio rock sounds as Foreigner and
Journey, Toto scored a hit right off the bat with their debut album,
1978's Toto, which cracked the U.S. Top Ten, as did one of its singles,
"Hold the Line." Despite the immediate commercial success, many critics
gave Toto the tag of being a "faceless slick band," and it appeared as
though it was a fitting description, as Toto's next two releases, 1979's
Hydra and 1981's Turn Back, failed to match the artistic and commercial
success of their hit debut. Just as it appeared as though Toto would
continue their slide off the charts, the group issued one of 1982's
biggest albums, the Grammy Award-winning Toto IV, a Top Five album that
spawned such monster hits as "Rosanna" (number two) and "Africa" (number
one), as well as a single that Lukather penned entirely himself, "I
Won't Hold You Back" (number ten). The same year, most of Toto was
invited to play on Michael Jackson's Thriller, one of the
biggest-selling albums in pop music history. As a result, session work
poured in for Lukather, as he played on '80s-era recordings by Elton
John, Herb Alpert, Warren Zevon, Chicago, Lionel Richie, Joni Mitchell,
and Neil Diamond, among countless others. Toto continued to issue albums
on a semi-regular basis, but after deciding to part ways with singer
Kimball after Toto IV, the group was unable to sustain their success.
Despite juggling his busy schedule between session dates and Toto,
Lukather managed to also launch a solo career during the late '80s, with
the release of his 1989 debut, Lukather. Further solo releases followed
(1994's Candyman, 1997's Luke, 2001's Grammy Award-winning
collaboration with Larry Carlton, No Substitutions, and 2003's
Santamental), as did further sessions (Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, Spinal
Tap, Van Halen, and the Yardbirds).

Simon
Phillips (born 6 February 1957) is a US-based English jazz, pop and
rock drummer,[1] songwriter, and record producer. He worked with rock
bands during the 1970s and 1980s and was the drummer for the band Toto
from 1992 to 2014.
Phillips worked as a session drummer for Jeff
Beck, Gary Moore, Bernie Marsden, Jon Lord, Mike Oldfield, Judas Priest,
Mike Rutherford, Tears for Fears, 10cc and The Who. He was the drummer
for The Who during the band's American reunion tour in 1989. He became
the drummer for the band Toto in 1992 after the death of Jeff Porcaro.
Career
Phillips
began to play professionally at the age of twelve in a dixieland band
led by his father, Sid Phillips for 4 years.[1] After his father's
death, he started playing pop and rock and found work in a production of
the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.[1] He worked as a session musician
for cast members, and this led to other session work.[1] Beginning in
the 1970s, he worked with Jeff Beck, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke, Peter
Gabriel, Pete Townshend, and Frank Zappa.[1]
Phillips was the drummer
in the Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno supergroup 801 on their 1976 album
801 Live. He replaced Judas Priest drummer Alan Moore on the band's Sin
After Sin album (1977) and went on to record Michael Schenker's 1980
debut album The Michael Schenker Group, as well as in Mike Rutherford's
Smallcreep's Day. In the early 1980s, Phillips formed part of RMS with
session musicians Mo Foster and Ray Russell. He was the drummer for The
Who on their 1989 American reunion tour and appeared on solo recordings
by band members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.
Around 1978,
British guitarist Gary Boyle made an album called "The Dancer" featuring
Simon Phillips. Phillips later also played on Evita where he
contributed some fabulous grooves.
In 1989 he recorded his debut
album with the band Protocol.[1] Wanting to make bigger changes in his
music career, Phillips decided to move to Los Angeles in the 1990s.
Toto
In
1992, Phillips had recently completed the recording of an album in
England when he was invited by Toto to fill in for Jeff Porcaro after
the latter died following the completion of the recording of Kingdom of
Desire.[2] He became the band's only choice as Porcaro liked his style
and that he toured with Steve Lukather and Carlos Santana on their solo
tours. Phillips decided to settle permanently in Los Angeles on that
matter and began rehearsals with the band. After the Kingdom of Desire
tour, Phillips officially joined Toto.
As the band began its 1995
Tambu tour, Phillips suffered from back problems and was unable to play
on the first leg of the said tour; the band turned to Gregg Bissonette
to substitute for him. When Phillips fell ill prior to the 2004 Night of
the Proms concert, Bissonette was unavailable to take over his drumming
duties, causing the band to invite Ricky Lawson instead.
Phillips'
last show with Toto was in 2013. He left the following year to focus on
his solo career and was replaced by Keith Carlock.
Other ventures
Five
years later he led a band that performed at the North Sea Jazz
Festival.[2] In 2002 he recorded a jazz album, Vantage Point, with
trumpeter Walt Fowler, saxophonist Brandon Fields, and pianist Jeff
Babko.[1] He has co-produced and engineered albums by Mike Oldfield,
Derek Sherinian, and Toto.[2] After leaving Toto, he became a member of a
trio with Hiromi Uehara and bassist Anthony Jackson.[3] Phillips has
also worked with Big Country, Jack Bruce, David Gilmour, Big Jim
Sullivan, and Whitesnake.[4]
In 2009, Phillips joined with
keyboardist Philippe Saisse and bassist Pino Palladino in forming an
instrumental jazz/funk rock trio: Phillips Saisse Palladino, PSP, which
toured in Europe in 2009 and 2010. Phillips also performed on Joe
Satriani's album Super Colossal, appearing on multiple tracks. Phillips
appears in Alan Parsons' Art & Science of Sound Recording
educational video series, as well as the program's single "All Our
Yesterdays". He played in the Michael Schenker Group album In the Midst
of Beauty and took part to the band's 30th Anniversary world tour in
2010. Phillips is featured on Hiromi Uehara's 2011 album, Voice. He also
toured with Hiromi and bassist Anthony Jackson as part of the Hiromi
Trio Project.[5]
Phillips playing in PSP in Rome, 2009
In 2019
Phillips was featured on the album Origin of Species. In addition to
playing drums and keyboards, he engineered, mixed, and helped
produce.[6]
Phillips cites Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham,
Steve Gadd, Ian Paice, Tommy Aldridge and Bernard Purdie as his main
influences.[7]
Awards and honors
In 2003, he was inducted into the Modern Drummer magazine Hall of Fame.[8]
In 2015 at the 14th Annual Independent Music Awards, Phillips was the
winner in the Jazz Instrumental Album category for Protocol II.
In 2019 Simon was voted #1 in the Fusion category of the annual Modern Drummer Readers Poll.
In 2019 the Protocol 4 album was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in the Contemporary Instrumental Album category.

An
innovative, aggressive drummer, Simon Phillips embarked on his musical
career at an early age. Born in 1957 in London, England, Phillips showed
affinity for the drums quickly -- beginning with a toy kit at age four,
and moving on to a snare and cymbal set at six. By age 12, Phillips was
performing and recording with his father's Dixieland jazz band. After
his father's death, Phillips left the jazz band and began exploring
other musical styles, including rock and musicals. A gig as a drummer
for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar led to session work, drumming
on the demos of various cast members.
As his connections in the
music scene grew, so did his session credits: From the '70s onward,
Phillips performed with prominent rock and jazz artists like Jeff Beck,
Pete Townshend, Gil Evans, Stanley Clark, Frank Zappa, and Peter
Gabriel. As a solo artist, Phillips debut in 1989 with Protocol, a
genre-bending recording in which he played all the instruments. He would
later expand the Protocol concept with other musicians.
Another Lifetime
By
the mid-'90s, however, Phillips was ready to lead his own band. Joined
by a cast of seasoned rock and jazz musicians including guitarists Ray
Russell and Andy Timmons, saxophonist Wendell Brooks, bassist Anthony
Jackson, percussionist Peter Michael Escovedo, and others, Phillips
began touring as a bandleader. During this period, he delivered several
well-regarded virtuoso jazz, rock and fusion-influenced albums including
1995's Force Majeure, and 1997's Another Lifetime. The live date, Out
of the Blue, appeared in 1999.
Phillips then turned his attention
towards driving, acoustic post-bop jazz on 2000's Vantage Point, which
featured pianist Jeff Babko, trumpeter Walt Fowler, saxophonist Brandon
Fields, and bassist Dave Carpenter. The drummer returned in 2010 with
the eponymous The Simon Phillips Band, followed a year later with 21
Spices. He then delivered several volumes of his Protocol project
including 2017's Protocol,Vol. 4, which featured guitarist Greg Howe,
keyboardist Dennis Hamm, and bassist Ernest Tibbs.

albums, Tomorrow's Yesterday and Nature's Serenade were released through
The Orchard; LTV: Love, Truth & Victory was released through P-Vine
Records.
Early life and career
Born and raised in Orange County,
Melvin Lee Davis played the violin at age four and the saxophone at age
six; he took up guitar while he was in high school. He was discovered by
a saxophone player in Buddy Miles's jazz band who was dating his sister
while Davis was playing at a club. Miles flew Davis to New York City to
audition and hired him on the spot.[1]
Davis played in New York City
clubs and met Soul Train producer Don Cornelius through a mutual
friend, Ron Kersey. According to Davis, Davis made many of his contacts
in R&B through Cornelius. "...if you were a black musician in the
business of making R&B and soul music and wanted to get on
television, you had to go through Don Cornelius," he said.[1][2]
His
association with Cornelius lead him to co-write the Soul Train theme,
"Soul Train's A-Comin'". Davis has worked for Grammy award winning
singer Chaka Khan as a session and touring bassist in addition to music
director. He's also worked with Lee Ritenour, Patti Austin, Gladys
Knight & the Pips, The Pointer Sisters, and Bryan Ferry.[2][3]

Toto
(stylized as TOTO) was an American rock band formed in 1977 in Los
Angeles. The band's most recent lineup consisted of Joseph Williams
(lead vocals), David Paich (keyboards, vocals), Steve Porcaro
(keyboards), Steve Lukather (guitars, vocals), plus touring members
Lenny Castro (percussion), Warren Ham (saxophone), Shem von Schroeck
(bass) and Shannon Forrest (drums). Toto is known for a musical style
that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard
rock, R&B, blues, and jazz. The band is currently on hiatus.
Paich
and Jeff Porcaro had played together as session musicians on several
albums and decided to form a band. David Hungate, Lukather, Steve
Porcaro, and Bobby Kimball were recruited before the first album
release. The band enjoyed great commercial success in the late 1970s and
1980s, beginning with the band's eponymous debut released in 1978. With
the release of the critically acclaimed and commercially successful
Toto IV (1982), Toto became one of the best-selling music groups of
their era.
Widely known for the Top 5 hits "Hold the Line",
"Rosanna", and "Africa", the makeup of the group continued to evolve.
Hungate left in 1982; Kimball left in 1984, but rejoined the band in
1998, leaving again in 2008. Jeff Porcaro died in 1992 of a heart
attack. Hungate rejoined Toto as a touring musician and later a band
member. In 2008, Lukather announced his departure from the band, and the
remaining band members later went their separate ways. In the summer of
2010, Toto reformed and went on a short European tour, with a new
lineup, to benefit Mike Porcaro, who had been diagnosed with amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS) and was no longer an active member of the band.
He died in 2015.[2] The band celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017.
Toto announced an extended hiatus following the final leg of their 40th
anniversary tour in 2019.
Toto has released 14 studio albums, and has
sold over 40 million records worldwide.[3] The group has been honored
with several Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of
Fame and Museum in 2009.[4]
History
1977: Formation
Toto in
1982 in London at the Hammersmith Odeon. (Steve Porcaro, Jon Smith,
Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather, Lenny Castro, Jeff Porcaro)
The
members of Toto were regulars on albums by Steely Dan,[5] Seals and
Crofts,[6] Boz Scaggs,[7] Sonny and Cher,[8] and many others,
contributing to many of the most popular records of the 1970s.
Keyboardist David Paich, son of musician and session player/arranger
Marty Paich, rose to fame after having co-written much of Scaggs's Silk
Degrees album. Having played on many sessions with drummer Jeff Porcaro
(the son of session percussionist Joe Porcaro), whom he met while
attending Grant High School, where they formed the band Rural Still
Life, Paich began to discuss seriously with Porcaro the possibility of
them forming their own band. They brought in bassist and fellow session
veteran David Hungate, having played with him in the backing band for
Scaggs. In addition, the duo asked fellow Grant High School students,
guitarist Steve Lukather (who also played in Scaggs's band as a
replacement for Les Dudek) and Jeff Porcaro's brother Steve Porcaro
(keyboards) to join the team. Lukather and Steve Porcaro were in the
same year at Grant and continued the band Rural Still Life (the name
shortened to Still Life) after Paich and Jeff graduated. With the
addition of former S.S. Fools singer Bobby Kimball, the group began to
work on their first album in 1977 after signing with Columbia Records.
1977–1979: Band name and debut album
Once
the band came together, David Paich began composing what would become
the eponymous debut album, Toto. According to popular myth, at the first
recording sessions, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from
other bands' in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word "Toto" on them.
In the early 1980s, band members told the press that the band was named
after Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz.[9] After the completion of the
first album, the band and record were still unnamed. David Hungate,
after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that
the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing." Because the
band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they
adopted the name "Toto" as their own.[citation needed]
After its
release, Toto climbed the charts quickly, earning popularity with the
hit single "Hold the Line", as well as the charting "I'll Supply the
Love" and "Georgy Porgy", featuring Cheryl Lynn. The band garnered
international acclaim and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New
Artist. Shortly thereafter, in early 1979, Toto embarked on their first
American tour in support of the debut album.[10] For the tour, Toto
brought along two additional musicians, Tom Kelly (guitar, backup
vocals) and Lenny Castro (percussion), to increase the depth of the
sound, and continued to bring additional touring musicians for all
subsequent tours. (See the "Tour Musicians" section below).
1980–1981: Hydra and Turn Back
At
the close of the first tour, the band began work on their next album,
titled Hydra, which was released later that year and featured the single
"99", inspired by George Lucas' cult film THX 1138.[11] Nearly 30 years
later, Steve Lukather confessed that, despite the song's popularity, he
hated "99" and that it's one of his least favorite Toto songs, which is
why it was rarely performed after Hydra's tour.[12] The band also
released four promotional music videos for the album, including the
title track. The other two were "St George and The Dragon" and "All Us
Boys". They were directed by Bruce Gowers and produced by Paul Flattery
for Jon Roseman Productions International. Although the album Hydra
failed to achieve the commercial success of Toto's first release, it
still went gold. Following the album's release, the band set out on the
"Hydra Tour", which featured both American and international dates. The
tour lasted from February until June 1980.[10]
In early 1981, Toto
released their third album, Turn Back. The album was a venture into
arena rock[13] and featured heavier guitar and fewer keyboards than on
the previous two records.
On December 15, 1981, Bobby Kimball was arrested for allegedly selling cocaine to an undercover police officer.[14]
1982: Toto IV
1982
marked the beginning of Toto's most successful era. After the
disappointing sales of Turn Back, the band was under a great deal of
pressure from the record company to produce a new smash record. With the
Triple Platinum-certified Toto IV, the band delivered one of the most
commercially successful records of the year. The album featured three
singles that reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart:
"Rosanna", "Africa" and "I Won't Hold You Back". The album also appeared
on several worldwide charts, introducing the band to new audiences
around the globe. "Africa" topped the charts in February 1983 and was a
constant presence on radios around the world, but it was "Rosanna" that
earned the band multiple Grammy nominations. Toto IV earned six Grammy
Awards, including "Record of the Year" for "Rosanna", "Album of the
Year" for Toto IV and "Producer of the Year". At the time Steve Porcaro
was dating actress Rosanna Arquette, but the song is not about her,
according to writer David Paich.[15] In the music video for the song,
Cynthia Rhodes plays the title character. In addition to "Africa" and
"Rosanna", Toto IV continued its successful run with the release of
another single, "Make Believe". Toto toured throughout 1982 in support
of Toto IV.[10] Also, during this time, Steve Porcaro co-wrote and
co-composed "Human Nature," which Michael Jackson recorded for his
best-selling album Thriller (1982), turning the song into a smash hit.
Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather also appeared on Thriller on multiple
tracks, most notably the Jackson/Paul McCartney duet "The Girl Is Mine".
1982–1985: Isolation
Subsequent
to the Toto IV release, bassist David Hungate left the band. Hungate,
who had relocated to Nashville in 1980 to pursue a session/production
career, felt that the fame surrounding Toto IV would prevent him from
spending time with his family. A third Porcaro brother, Mike Porcaro,
who had performed cello on a track from Toto IV, replaced Hungate on
bass. Lead singer Bobby Kimball spent the early part of 1983 facing
prosecution for drug-related charges. Kimball was ordered to stand
trial, but pleaded not guilty. The charges were dismissed on May 28 of
that year.[16] However, Kimball was fired from the band in 1984.[17]
Later that year, Toto composed most of the music for the soundtrack to
the film Dune.
At one point, Richard Page of the band Mr. Mister was
offered the lead singer spot, but turned it down to continue with his
band. Fergie Frederiksen (formerly of bands Angel, Trillion and LeRoux)
was brought in as the new vocalist and the band recorded Isolation,
released in November 1984. While Isolation did not achieve the acclaim
or sales of Toto IV, it did achieve Gold status, largely on the strength
of the single "Stranger in Town". Isolation's tour began in February
1985 and concluded three months later.[10]
1985–1988: Fahrenheit and The Seventh One with Joseph Williams
David Paich during a live concert
At
the close of the Isolation tour in 1985, Fergie Frederiksen was let go.
Lukather claimed that the band was not meshing well with Frederiksen
because he had a difficult time recording with them in the studio.[18]
The band held an audition and Joseph Williams, son of film composer John
Williams and 1950s singer/actress Barbara Ruick, was chosen to take
over lead vocals in early 1986.
With Joseph Williams now onboard
officially, Toto wrote and recorded Fahrenheit, released in October
1986. While Williams performs lead vocals, Frederiksen had begun
recording a few tracks and is featured as a background vocalist on the
track "Could This Be Love".
Fahrenheit brought the band back from the
heavier sound of Isolation to their pop/rock roots. "I'll Be Over You"
and "Without Your Love", which were both ballads sung by Lukather, were
the two hit singles. The band recruited several guest musicians for the
album. They recorded an instrumental piece entitled "Don't Stop Me Now"
with legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. In addition, a then-unknown
Paula Abdul appeared as a dancer in their "Till the End" music video.
Michael McDonald provided backup vocals on the song "I'll Be Over You"
(and appeared in the accompanying music video), while Eagles founder and
songwriting giant Don Henley appeared on the Steve Porcaro penned track
"Lea".
After its release, the band embarked on another world tour.
Upon its conclusion in 1987, Steve Porcaro left the band to pursue a
career in film and television scoring. Fahrenheit eventually went Gold
on October 3, 1994.[19] Steve Porcaro was never replaced and Toto
decided to continue with only five members. Although Porcaro
occasionally assisted the band on synthesizers for their subsequent
studio albums (and appeared on their 1988 tour), David Paich handled
most of the live keyboard work (with keyboard technician John Jessel
assisting on certain dates) post 1988.
In 1988 Toto released their
next album The Seventh One, featuring Jon Anderson of Yes on backup
vocals on the single "Stop Loving You". The album's other single,
"Pamela", became very popular and would be the band's last to hit the US
Top 40. The Seventh One became the band's most successful release since
Toto IV.[20] The band toured from February through July 1988.[10]
1988–1990: Past To Present and Jean-Michel Byron
Steve Lukather on Varus Open Air in Osnabrück, Germany, 2004
Although
"The Seventh One Tour" was very successful, after it was finished the
band decided to replace lead singer Joseph Williams. Originally, the
band wanted to reunite with original vocalist Bobby Kimball to record
new songs for a greatest hits record, but the record company instead
insisted they hire South African singer Jean-Michel Byron. Before Byron
was brought in, the band recorded "Goin' Home" with Kimball. This song
was later featured on the Toto XX album as an "unreleased song." When
Byron was brought in (in 1989) he and Toto recorded four new songs which
were included on their greatest hits album Past to Present 1977–1990,
released in 1990. Toto then embarked upon the "Planet Earth" tour that
lasted from September until December 1990. The band didn't get along
with Byron, whose diva-like behavior and flamboyant stage presence
caused friction during the tour. He was demoted to background vocals
before ultimately being fired at the conclusion of the tour. During this
time, the band also found that former singer Bobby Kimball was booking
shows and billing himself and his backing band as "Toto".[21] In April,
mirroring the situation that had happened with Kimball seven years
previously, former singer Joseph Williams was arrested on drug-related
charges.[22]
Lukather's first solo album was released in 1989, named
Lukather, and featured musicians such as Eddie Van Halen and Richard
Marx.
1991–1992: Kingdom of Desire and Jeff Porcaro's death
Once
again without a lead vocalist, guitarist Steve Lukather sang lead vocals
and became the new front man. Toto played at the Montreux Jazz Festival
in 1991 and the band recorded Kingdom of Desire, which was released on
Columbia Records in most parts of the world and on Clive Davis' label
Relativity Records in the United States.
Jeff Porcaro died in an
accident on August 5, 1992, at the age of 38 while working in his
garden. According to the LA Times Report, the Los Angeles County
Coroner's office lists the cause of death to be a heart attack from the
hardening of the arteries caused by cocaine use.[23][24] Facing the
prospect of a tour without Jeff, Toto almost broke up. However, Jeff
Porcaro's family insisted the band continue. The band contacted Los
Angeles-based Englishman Simon Phillips to replace Jeff Porcaro as they
knew that Porcaro liked Phillips and because Lukather worked with
Phillips on a previous tour with Santana and Jeff Beck in Japan in 1986.
Phillips
joined the band and they went on the tour, which they dedicated to
Jeff's memory. In 1993 they released a live album called Absolutely
Live. From 1991 on, Steve Lukather would handle a majority of the vocals
(until Bobby Kimball's return in 1998), but some older songs originally
sung by Kimball, Fergie Frederiksen, and Joseph Williams were put in
the set list and sung by new backup singers Fred White (who was replaced
by John James in 1992), Jackie McGee (who had joined for the 1990 tour
and was replaced by Donna McDaniel in 1992) and Jenny Douglas-McRae (who
had also come aboard in 1990). John sang "Stop Loving You" and Bobby's
part on "Rosanna", Donna sang "Home of the Brave" and "Angel Don't Cry",
and Jenny sang "Hold the Line".
On December 14, 1992, the Tribute to
Jeff Porcaro Concert was held at Universal City's Universal
Amphitheatre. Performers including Don Henley, Eddie Van Halen, Donald
Fagen, Walter Becker, Boz Scaggs, James Newton Howard, Michael McDonald,
Richard Marx and special guest George Harrison performed various Toto
songs along with the four remaining Toto members.[25] At the close of
the tour, the band then took a break to pursue individual projects as
well as to keep up their session schedules.
From March to November
1993, Lukather and Phillips teamed up with friends David Garfield and
John Pena on the side project Los Lobotomys and recorded the album
Candyman.
1995–1997: Addition of Simon Phillips and Tambu
In 1995
Toto recorded Tambu, their first album with Simon Phillips, which saw
the band back with CBS (now Sony). A departure from Toto's sound of the
late 1970s and 1980s, Tambu was a very organic release and featured the
single "I Will Remember", which received moderate radio play. Other
singles released were "Drag Him To The Roof" and "The Turning Point".
Tambu also featured John James and Jenny Douglas-McRae as backup singers
on some of the tracks. Douglas-McRae even sang lead on the album's
bonus track, "Blackeye", and also in a duet with Steve Lukather on "Baby
He's Your Man". Tambu sold 600,000 copies worldwide.[citation needed]
The
"Tambu Tour" proved to be another success, although there were no North
American dates. Simon Phillips suffered from a back problem, so Gregg
Bissonette had to fill in for him during the first leg of the tour in
late 1995. The tour concluded in 1996. The rest of the tour personnel
remained the same, with the exception of Donna McDaniel who had left in
1994 shortly after the "Night of the Proms" performances (which
Douglas-McRae had missed since she was out touring with Joe Cocker). The
song "Hold the Line" was now sung as a duet between James and
Douglas-McRae.[26] Both James and Douglas-McRae were dropped from the
band at the conclusion of the 1997 tour.
Lukather released his second solo album, Luke, which was a more "introspective" album than his previous solo album.
1997–2001: Toto XX, Bobby Kimball's return and Mindfields
1997
marked the band's 20th anniversary, and in order to commemorate it,
David Paich and Steve Lukather started to go through several old tapes
and demos for a special record of unreleased songs. In 1998 they
released Toto XX with the single "Goin' Home". Toto went on a small
promotional tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and
Joseph Williams.
After the "Toto XX" tour, Bobby Kimball rejoined the
band as lead singer after 14 years. The band released Mindfields in
early 1999 and embarked on the "Reunion" tour, touring worldwide and
returning to the United States for the first time in six years. The new
album featured three singles, "Melanie", "Cruel" and "Mad About You", a
song co-written by David Paich and former Toto vocalist Joseph Williams.
Later that year, a live album titled Livefields was released. The tour
officially concluded in 2000, but the band played a few shows throughout
2001. David Paich briefly took a break from touring in 2000, so Jeff
Babko filled in on keyboards.[27] Paich then resumed touring with Toto
in 2001.
2002–2003: Through the Looking Glass and Toto's 25th anniversary
In
2002, in celebration of Toto's 25th anniversary, the band released
Through the Looking Glass, a covers album that paid tribute to the
band's musical influences, such as Bob Marley, Steely Dan, George
Harrison and Elton John. Two singles were released, "Could You Be
Loved", a Bob Marley cover, and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", a
Beatles cover. The album was not a commercial success and many fans were
upset about the release, thinking that the band should have written new
material instead.[28] However, the record gave the band material to
promote their "25th Anniversary Tour", which started in 2002 and
concluded in 2003. After the tour, Toto released a live album and DVD of
the show titled Live in Amsterdam. Both the live album and the DVD were
released in late 2003.
2003–2005: Greg Phillinganes and David Paich's semi-retirement
Toto
on stage at the Summer Tour 2004 in Modena, Italy, July 11, 2004. From
the left: Tony Spinner, David Paich, Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather,

Beginning in June 2003, near the end of
their "25th Anniversary Tour", keyboardist David Paich took a leave of
absence from touring to spend time with a sick family member. Veteran
keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich for the rest of the
tour.
In late 2003, Toto headlined Night of the Proms for two months
straight. Paich returned but was only able to play for a few weeks
before he had to leave again, so Phillinganes once again filled in for
the remainder of the shows. After Simon Phillips announced of illness,
Jon Fariss and Ricky Lawson joined the band for the Night of the Proms.
In early 2004, the band embarked on a world tour that went throughout
2004 and 2005. Paich only occasionally appeared, with Phillinganes
playing at most of the shows. In 2005, Phillinganes was asked to become a
regular member of the band and Paich retired from touring. Paich was
still a member of Toto, however, as he continued to record and produce
on all of Toto's releases.[29][citation needed]
In October 2003,
Steve Lukather released a Christmas album named Santamental, featuring
musicians such as Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Steve Vai and Gregg
Bissonette.
2006–2008: Falling In Between and Falling In Between Live
Steve Lukather and Greg Phillinganes, in Trondheim, Norway, August 4, 2007
In
early 2006, Toto released Falling in Between on the Italian label
Frontiers, their first album of new material since 1999. The release
featured extensive keyboard work from Steve Porcaro and a duet with
Joseph Williams on the first single, "Bottom of Your Soul". Following
the record's release, Toto embarked on an extensive worldwide tour in
2006, which continued into 2007 for a second leg. The 2007 leg featured
Leland Sklar filling in on bass for Mike Porcaro due to an (at the time)
undisclosed illness. 2007 featured extensive dates in both Europe and
the United States, including an appearance at Moondance Jam in Walker,
Minnesota. Former lead singer Fergie Frederiksen made a guest appearance
at the Minneapolis date on May 5, 2007[30] and Joseph Williams also
made a few guest appearances with the band in June 2007.[31]
Kimball and Lukather live in 2007
Toto
released a two-CD set Falling in Between Live on Eagle Records to
commemorate the tour. This live set marks the fourth for the band,
following 1993's Absolutely Live, 1999's Livefields and 2003's Live In
Amsterdam.
In 2008, a companion DVD of the show which was recorded in Paris in March 2007 was released.
2008: First hiatus
After
a period of rumors and some allusions, on June 5, 2008, Lukather posted
a message on his official website, stating, "The fact is yes I have
left Toto. There is no more Toto. I just can't do it anymore and at 50
years old I wanted to start over and give it one last try on my
own."[32]
As the main motivation for his decision, Lukather said:
When Dave [Paich] retired that was REAL hard for me 'cause we started
the band together. Hell, it's 35 years if you count High School where
the core all met. When Mike [Porcaro] fell ill and had to leave that was
it for me. If there isn't Paich or at least one Porcaro how can we even
call it Toto? ... Honestly, I have just had enough. This is NOT a
break. It is over. I really can't go out and play Hold The Line with a
straight face anymore.
Steve Lukather released his next solo album on February 22, 2008, named Ever Changing Times.
2010: Reformation
On
February 26, 2010, the band reformed and reunited for a brief tour of
Europe in the summer to benefit Mike Porcaro, who had been diagnosed
with ALS. The lineup featured David Paich, Steve Lukather, Steve
Porcaro, Simon Phillips, Joseph Williams and special guest Nathan
East.[33]
Steve Lukather stated that the band still exists:
Edit
to 2010.. well with Mike not being well and some of us missing each
other the REAL high school friends (yes that includes Joe!!) got back
together for the RIGHT reason. People want to hear the hits played the
way they were recorded, Joe has his voice back 100% and I loved having
that power in front again and all REAL, BIG vocals again strong and
seeing Paich AND Steve Porcaro with THOSE real keyboard sounds, Simon
back and as Lee was busy having old pal Nate East step in.. it was so
much fun and so successful we thought "Hmm, maybe a few gigs once in
awhile would be fun" and we can make some money etc.. please some of the
hard core fans. We ALL have outside careers that keep us all busy, not
to mention families etc.. no one really wants to make new music, not a
full record anyway. MAYBE a track someday but not in the near future. I
am on tour for a year anyway and enjoying a very successful sold out
solo tour and my record sales are better than they have ever been so I
dont wanna mess THAT up and everyone has their own very busy successful
lives and once in awhile.. why not right? There is no covert BS goin on
here.[34]
On October 11, 2010, Steve Lukather released his next solo album, All's Well That Ends Well.
Another
tour in the summer of 2011 took place with former backup singer Jenny
Douglas once again joining. Their show on July 17, 2011 in Verona, Italy
was recorded for a live DVD but has yet to be released because of a
contractual issue with their former label. They once again toured Europe
in 2012.[35]
2013–2014: 35th anniversary, death of Fergie Frederiksen, Simon Phillips' departure
In
2013, celebrating their 35th anniversary, the band embarked on tour
across Europe and North America, along with Japanese dates to follow in
2014. Their show on June 25, 2013 in Łódź, Poland was recorded for a
live release and was released on April 29, 2014. On November 5, it was
confirmed both on Toto's and David Paich's official Facebook pages that a
new studio album was in the works and that the band planned to go into
the studio early 2014.
On January 21, 2013, Steve Lukather released
his latest solo album, Transition, featuring former Toto touring bassist
Leland Sklar, as well as Gregg Bissonette and Chad Smith.
On January
18, 2014, former vocalist Fergie Frederiksen died after a long battle
with liver cancer.[36][37] After the 2013 leg of the 35th anniversary
tour, it was revealed via the band's official website on January 23,
2014 that Simon Phillips had departed the band to pursue a solo career.
Phillips was then replaced by Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock.[38]
2014: David Hungate's return and North American tour with Michael McDonald
While
Keith Carlock was now part of the band, he did not join them for at
least the North American tour and his role was filled by Shannon
Forrest. Bass player Nathan East, who had been touring with them since
2010, left after the Japanese tour to pursue his own projects. Instead,
original bass player David Hungate rejoined the band. They once again
toured the United States in spring 2014 as co-headliners with singer
Michael McDonald. It was their most comprehensive tour on the continent
in years.[39][40][41]
2015–2017: Toto XIV and Mike Porcaro's death
Toto
released their fourteenth studio album and their first in nine years
titled Toto XIV on March 20 (Europe), March 23 (UK and Oceania), and
March 24, 2015 (North America). To promote the newly finished project,
the band started a world tour running with an extensive European
headline arena tour including appearances at key festivals, along with a
North American tour to follow in the summer of 2015 and Asia later that
year.[42][43]
On March 15, 2015, former bassist Mike Porcaro died,
due to complications from his battle with ALS, in his sleep at his home
in Los Angeles.[44]
On April 6, 2015, Toto announced that they would
embark on August 7, 2015 in Mashantucket, Connecticut with veteran
progressive band Yes on a joint summer tour of North America due to end
on September 12, 2015 in Coquitlam, British Columbia.[45][46][47] Dave
Santos took over bass from Dave Hungate for the final three dates of the
2015 tour and Shannon Forrest has continued to perform as the band's
drummer.
On September 29, 2015, Toto announced the first leg of their
2016 Tour in support of Toto XIV consisting of European and Japanese
dates. Leland Sklar, who joined them on their 2007 and 2008 tours,
replaced founding member Hungate.[48] Sklar stopped touring with Toto in
early 2017 and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
In June 2016,
keyboardist Steve Porcaro released his first solo album, titled
Someday/Somehow featuring Michael McDonald and Toto touring backing
singer Mabvuto Carpenter.
2018–2019: 40th anniversary, 40 Trips Around the Sun, All In, Old Is New and second hiatus
On
February 9, 2018, Toto released their anniversary album 40 Trips Around
the Sun. They then embarked on a world tour promoting the album
celebrating 40 years of playing music. The band's lineup consisted of
the current Toto lineup (Joseph Williams, Steve Lukather, David Paich
and Steve Porcaro), and their touring musicians: Lenny Castro, Shannon
Forrest, Warren Ham and Shem von Schroeck.
On July 20, 2018, Toto
announced: "David Paich will not be performing on the band's planned
North American tour. He plans on focusing on his health and looks
forward to returning to the road when ready to do so. In the absence of
the founding keyboardist's presence on the tour, Dominique 'Xavier'
Taplin (formerly with Prince) will be sitting in for David performing
with Toto".[49]
Guitarist Steve Lukather performing a solo on Toto's
live cover version of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
during the Live At Chelsea festival at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on
June 13, 2019.
After the European leg of the tour, Toto covered
Weezer's song "Hash Pipe" in response to their cover of Toto's 1981
number 1 single, "Africa". The band added the cover to their setlist as
the Encore for the 2018 North American leg of the tour.
On September
18, 2018, guitarist Steve Lukather released his autobiography The Gospel
According to Luke, a humorous review on his life in music. An Audiobook
was released shortly after on Audible.[50]
On November 6, 2018, the
band released the box set All In which contained their fourteenth studio
album Old Is New. This contained the three new tracks already released
on 40 Trips Around the Sun plus completed recordings of four other older
tracks featuring Jeff Porcaro on drums and either Mike Porcaro or David
Hungate on bass plus other new recordings.
On January 2, 2019, Toto
kicked off their 2019 leg of the 40 Trips Around The Sun tour in Byron
Bay at the Falls Festival. Xavier Taplin remained in place of Paich
through that tour. Toto embarked upon a brief tour of North America on
September 20, 2019 – Steve Lukather stated that the tour will be the
band's last for "a while," and that tensions within the band and its
management have increased due to ongoing legal troubles, such as an
ongoing lawsuit with the widow of founding member and drummer Jeff
Porcaro, Susan Porcaro-Goings[51] (current wife of Rick Goings). David
Paich made a special appearance with the group at the tour opener in Los
Angeles, singing and playing on “Africa” and “Home of the Brave.”
On
October 16, 2019, Steve Lukather stated that after the final show in
Philadelphia on October 20, 2019, it would mark the "end of this
configuration of Toto".[52] Steve Lukather had also announced that there
is a film about Toto in the works, and hinted that he would be writing a
new book, titled The New Testament According to Luke. David Paich made
another special appearance at the final show in Philadelphia to again
perform "Africa" and "Home of the Brave".
Session work (1970s to early 1990s)
Before,
and during Toto, the members did various session work for a slew of
notable musicians. The first of which, which also led to the birth of
the band was with Boz Scaggs, in which Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, David
Hungate, and Joe Porcaro (regular Toto guest contributor and father of
Jeff, Steve, and Mike) played on his smash hit album Silk Degrees.[53]
The members had done smaller scale work before this album working with
the likes of Steely Dan,[54] Seals and Crofts,[55] and Sonny &
Cher,[56] among others. Steve Lukather provided the main guitar work on
Michael Jackson's hit "Beat It", although Eddie Van Halen played the
guitar solo in the bridge. Jeff Porcaro played drums on the track,[57]
while Steve Porcaro programmed synthesizer for the Thriller album and
also co-wrote and co-composed "Human Nature".
In 1982, the rock band
Chicago brought in David Foster to produce their album Chicago 16. They
had considered using him for their 1980 album Chicago XIV, but went with
Tom Dowd instead. Under Foster's direction, the band adopted more of a
soft rock sound, shed most of its jazz fusion/horn section sound, and
brought in many session musicians, something that alienated Chicago
member Robert Lamm a bit. Of the musicians chosen, three were Steve
Lukather, David Paich, and Steve Porcaro, the three core members of
Toto.[58]
In 1978, under David Foster's direction (who also produced
the aforementioned Chicago album on which Toto also played), he brought
in David Hungate, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro, and Toto vocalist Bobby
Kimball to play on Alice Cooper's 1978 album From the Inside. They have
also played with legendary jazz player Miles Davis as well. Other
artists/bands that the members of Toto collaborated with include; Larry
Carlton, Pink Floyd, Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, James
Newton-Howard, Michael McDonald, Eagles, Earth, Wind & Fire, Yes,
Eddie Van Halen, Los Lobotomys, Yoso, Richard Page (of Mr. Mister, and
was proposed to replace Bobby Kimball), and Ringo Starr & His
All-Starr Band (also featuring Richard Page).

Toto
defined the slick, smooth sound of Southern California in the late '70s
and early '80s. This isn't quite the same thing as saying Toto solely
played soft rock, although they contributed their share of adult
contemporary standards, both as a band and as session musicians for
Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, George Benson, and Michael Jackson. Veterans of
high-end Los Angeles studios, guitarist Steve Lukather, keyboardists
David Paich and Steve Porcaro, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and bassist David
Hungate could play anything from soul to hard rock, which they proceeded
to do on Toto's earliest albums. They were a hit right out of the gate
in 1978, with "Hold the Line" rocketing to number five, but their career
was made by their 1982 album Toto IV, an immaculate collection of
pop/rock confections that spun off three Billboard Top Ten hits --
"Rosanna," "Africa," and "I Won't Hold You Back" -- on its way to
winning five Grammys. Toto IV was such a big hit that Toto forever lived
in its shadow, but the group persevered over the next four decades,
withstanding numerous personnel changes -- and one extended hiatus -- as
they stayed in the studio and on the road, maintaining a cult following
while their classic catalog, particularly "Africa," earned new
generations of listeners.
Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music
Prior
to their formation in 1976, most of the members of Toto were already
Los Angeles music biz insiders. A couple were even born into the
business. David Paich was the son of celebrated arranger Marty Paich,
who worked on Ray Charles' landmark 1962 album Modern Sounds in Country
and Western Music. Jeff Porcaro's dad drummed on several Lalo Schifrin
scores, and played in sessions with Nancy Sinatra and the Monkees. David
Paich and Jeff Porcaro met while attending Van Nuys' Grant High School,
and while they were students, they played together in a band called
Rural Still Life. After graduation, Paich and Porcaro became session
musicians, both playing on records by Steely Dan, Cher, and Seals &
Crofts, among many others. Paich wound up co-composing over half of Boz
Scaggs' 1976 groundbreaking smash Silk Degrees, including the hits
"Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle," which turned the keyboardist into a hot
commodity among record labels. He and Porcaro, who also played on Silk
Degrees, decided to form Toto, recruiting bassist David Hungate from
Scaggs' band, along with Jeff's keyboardist brother Steve and guitarist
Steve Lukather, who also had a history with Boz Scaggs. The final
addition was singer Bobby Kimball, and Toto signed to Columbia in 1976.
Toto
Released
in October of 1978, Toto's eponymous debut swiftly became a hit, with
its lead single, "Hold the Line," climbing to number five on Billboard's
Hot 100. Toto also made its way into the Top Ten, peaking at nine; it
was certified gold by the end of 1978 and platinum in January. In 1979,
Toto were nominated for two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, which they
lost to the disco outfit A Taste of Honey, and Producer of the Year,
which they took home. Hydra quickly followed in October 1979, but it
stalled out on the charts at 37, with its hit single "99" going no
further than 26 on the charts; Hydra still was certified gold in March
1980. The harder-edged Turn Back appeared in 1981 but it stiffed,
peaking at 41 on the Top 200 and failing to generate a hit single.
Thriller
Toto's
fourth album was positioned as make-or-break record for the band and
1982's Toto IV did indeed make the band. Deliberately constructed as an
immaculately produced mainstream pop record, Toto IV turned into the
blockbuster it was designed to be, peaking at four on the Billboard
charts, earning three platinum certifications (two arriving within its
chart run, the latter coming in 1991), and winning a whopping five
Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album
of the Year. The song-based awards were awarded to "Rosanna," the
album's first single, which went to number two on Billboard, but the
record's second single, "Africa," was a bigger hit, reaching number one
in early 1983. One final single, "I Won't Hold You Back," reached number
ten in 1983, right around the time "Human Nature" -- a Michael Jackson
single co-written with Steve Porcaro -- was on the charts. "Human
Nature" was pulled from Thriller, the 1982 blockbuster from Michael
Jackson that featured both Porcaro brothers, Steve Lukather, and David
Paich, meaning Toto were once again on the charts both as a band and as
session musicians.
Dune [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]
Although
Toto were at the peak of their fame, there was trouble brewing behind
the scenes. David Hungate left the band after the release of Toto IV,
relocating to Nashville so he could play and produce sessions in the
Music City; he was replaced by Michael Porcaro, Jeff and Steve's
brother. Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in 1984 in the wake of
the dismissal of drug charges from 1981 that he spent the majority of
1983 defending. Toto regrouped by composing and recording the score to
David Lynch's adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic Dune, and by
the time the soundtrack hit the shelves in December 1984, the band
delivered Isolation. Recorded with new singer Fergie Frederiksen, who
previously sang with Trillion and Le Roux, the arena rock-leaning
Isolation didn't appeal to as wide an audience as Toto IV. It peaked at
42 on the Billboard Top 200, going gold in February 1985 with its first
single, "Stranger in Town," reaching 30. Following the conclusion of the
Isolation tour, Frederiksen was fired from the band.
Fahrenheit
Hiring
Joseph Williams as their lead singer, Toto quickly wrote and recorded
Fahrenheit, which echoed the pop sounds of Toto IV but still found space
for a cameo by Miles Davis. Released in August 1986, the album reached
40 on the Top 200 while generating a number 11 hit in the form of "I'll
Be Over You," which featured Michael McDonald on backing vocals. Steve
Porcaro parted ways with Toto at the end of the Fahrenheit supporting
tour. He showed up on some dates on the tour for 1988's The Seventh One,
which became their last album to feature a Top 40 single in the form of
"Pamela," which peaked at 22.
Past to Present 1977-1990
Once the
Seventh One album cycle was completed, Toto entered a period of turmoil.
Joseph Williams left the band and was replaced by Jean-Michel Byron,
but his time with Toto was brief: he recorded new songs for the 1990
compilation Past to Present 1977-1990 before being fired after its
supporting tour. Steve Lukather took the lead vocal spot for Kingdom of
Desire, which appeared in Europe in 1992 and America in 1993. Before
Kingdom of Desire had its initial release, Jeff Porcaro died of a heart
attack while gardening at home on August 5, 1992. Toto replaced their
founding member with Simon Phillips, who had previously played with
Lukather on a tour with Jeff Beck and Carlos Santana in 1986. This new
version of the band was showcased on the 1993 live album Absolutely
Live, which was recorded two months after Jeff Porcaro's death. The new
lineup made its first studio album, Tambu, in 1996.
Mindfields
Toto
celebrated their 20th anniversary in 1998 with the release of Toto XX, a
collection of rarities, outtakes, and demos. Bobby Kimball, the band's
original lead singer, rejoined Toto in 1998 and the group released
Mindfields in March 1999, supporting it with a tour that was dubbed as a
reunion; the tour was captured on the 1999 album Livefields. Through
the Looking Glass, a collection of covers, appeared in 2002, followed by
a tour celebrating the band's 25th anniversary. The tour was documented
on the 2003 set Live in Amsterdam.
Falling in Between
Over the
next few years, Toto experienced some upheavals in their lineup as David
Paich sat out several concerts between 2003 and 2005. Greg Phillinganes
was hired as his substitute and, by 2005, he became the band's
full-time touring keyboardist, with Paich remaining a member of Toto in
the studio. Falling in Between, the group's first collection of original
material since Mindfields, appeared in 2006. On its supporting tour,
bassist Mike Porcaro sat out the 2007 dates; Leland Sklar took his place
and appears on the 2007 live set Falling in Between Live. On June 5,
2008, Steve Lukather announced on his website that "there is no more
Toto," but instead of breaking up for good, the band entered a two-year
hiatus. In February 2010, the group reunited for concerts to benefit
Mike Porcaro, who had recently been diagnosed with ALS. Nathan East took
Mike's place and Joseph Williams came back aboard as lead singer. The
2010 tour was a success, leading to subsequent tours in 2011 and 2012. A
35th Anniversary tour followed in 2013, with Simon Phillips leaving the
band in January 2014; he was replaced by Keith Carlock, who previously
played with Steely Dan, John Mayer, and Sting. Nathan East left not long
afterward, replaced by original bassist David Hungate.
Toto XIV
Toto
XIV, which featured Hungate on some tracks and Paich and all cuts,
appeared in March 2015. Just prior to its release, Mike Porcaro died
from complications from ALS. Toto toured through 2015, playing several
co-headlining dates with Yes. By that time Carlock had left the band;
his replacement was Shannon Forrest. Toto also rounded out their touring
lineup in 2015 with percussionist Lenny Castro, who'd played with the
band in the '80s. Soon, Hungate left the band again, replaced by Leland
Sklar, whose tenure was brief; he was replaced by Shem von Schroeck in
2017.
40 Trips Around the Sun
Toto planned 2018 as a 40-year
Anniversary celebration, releasing the compilation 40 Trips Around the
Sun in commemoration of their founding and planning a supporting tour.
That year, the band experienced a spike in popularity thanks to a
resurgence of popularity for their 1982 number one hit "Africa." Younger
listeners turned it into a viral sensation on the Internet, and that
popularity crossed over into the mainstream when Weezer covered "Africa"
after a 14-year-old fan urged the band to do so on Twitter. Weezer's
"Africa" became a hit, reaching number one on Billboard's alternative
rock chart and 54 on the Top 100, and Toto returned the favor by
recording a version of Weezer's "Hash Pipe."

Birds
of Fire is the second studio album by jazz fusion band the Mahavishnu
Orchestra. It was released on January 3, 1973 by Columbia Records and is
the last studio album released by the original band line-up before it
dissolved.
As with the group's previous album, The Inner Mounting
Flame, Birds of Fire consists solely of compositions by John McLaughlin.
These include the track "Miles Beyond (Miles Davis)", which McLaughlin
dedicated to his friend and former bandleader.
The back cover of the album features the poem "Revelation" by Sri Chinmoy.
Release history
In
addition to the standard two-channel stereo album there was also a
four-channel quadraphonic version released during the 1970s. The quad LP
was encoded in the SQ matrix format.
A remastered version of the
album was released on CD in 2000 by Sony Music Entertainment. It
features a new set of liner notes by JazzTimes critic Bill Milkowski, as
well as photographs of the band. In 2015 the album was re-issued on
Super Audio CD by Audio Fidelity containing both the stereo and quad
mixes.
Reception
Reviewing the album for All About Jazz in 2002, Walter Kolosky said of the title track:
"Birds of Fire," which opens up the album, is a fusion classic. John
McLaughlin scares the hell out of his guitar with his melodic
convulsions. If you ever want to frighten a musical neophyte, turn your
stereo up really loud and play the cover tune - it's guaranteed to send
him or her fleeing.[5]

Spectrum
is the debut solo album by jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham. The album
was heavily influenced by the music of Miles Davis, with whom Cobham had
previously collaborated extensively, and Cobham's previous band
Mahavishnu Orchestra.
The song "Stratus" appears in the video game
Grand Theft Auto IV of the radio station "Fusion FM", as well as being
the main sample in the Massive Attack hit "Safe from Harm".
Recording
The
recording process took place at Electric Lady Studios. According to
Leland Sklar it was done in just two or three days and almost every
track that ended up on a record was "first or second take at the
most".[1]
Ken Scott, engineer of Spectrum, recounted: "Bill Cobham's
drums were treated in exactly the same way as I recorded every other
drummer. I just used more mics: Neumann U67s on toms, D20s or RE20s (at
Electric Lady) on the bass drums, Neumann KM54 or 56 on snare, and
either STC 4038s or Beyer M160 ribbon mics for the overheads. One other
thing: in order to dampen the snare, Bill just laid his wallet on the
top head."
Leland Sklar, bassist on four of the songs, remarked,
"Spectrum is such a benchmark for so many people. There was a sort of
fire in it. It was new ground and it wasn't very analytical. It was more
flying by the seat of your pants. That's where great accidents happen,
which seems impossible these days. We never did more than a couple of
takes on any of it. It was more or less a two-day record. It went by so
fast."[2] Sklar and Hammer recall that the music was recorded live and
was not fixed in any way afterwards[3], which, in particular, resulted
in capturing Tommy Bolin breaking his high E string while soloing on
"Taurian Matador" (approximately at 1:45 into the track) and continuing
playing.[4] Bolin used Fender Stratocaster and Maestro Echoplex delay
unit, prominently heard on "Quadrant 4". Sklar attests that he played
his 1962 Fender Jazz bass through a small Univox amp with a single 12″
speaker.[5]
Not as well known at the time, Tommy Bolin plays lead
guitar on four songs. Cobham had met Bolin years before, when he was a
member of Zephyr. Bolin had recently joined rock band James Gang, and
recorded his first album with that band just two months prior to the
Spectrum sessions.[6]
"To the Women in My Life" is unusual in that
Cobham himself does not play on it, though he did produce the track. It
is an unaccompanied piano piece performed by Jan Hammer.

Spectrum
received positive reviews from contemporary critics. However, Robert
Christgau offered a dissenting review for Creem magazine, calling Cobham
"Mahavishnu's muscle-headed muscle man" and saying, "Despite a few
tough minutes this is basically slick, gimmicky, one-dimensional—in a
word, undemanding. All of which may make him a star."[11] Scott Yanow
was more impressed by the record, writing years later in his review for
AllMusic that Spectrum remains Cobham's best and an exceptional jazz
fusion album with "rock-ish rhythms and jazz improvising".[7]

Background and content
Of
the album tracks, four are originals by Narada Michael Walden and one
by Hammer. Max Middleton contributed the homage to Led Zeppelin, "Led
Boots", and Beck chose to interpret the Charles Mingus ode to
saxophonist Lester Young, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", from the classic 1959
jazz album Mingus Ah Um. These last two tracks have been long-time
staples of Beck's performance repertoire.
On 27 March 2001, a
remastered edition for compact disc was reissued by Legacy Records, Epic
and its parent label Columbia Records are now a division of Sony Music
Entertainment.

Wired
received mostly positive reviews when it was released. In Rolling
Stone, the reviewer cited it as being full of "fire and imagination".[4]
However, Robert Christgau faulted it as technically proficient but
soulless, calling it "mindless trickery".[5] Engineer Peter Henderson
later said of the album, "I listened to that a few years later and it
sounded like it had been recorded direct to cassette. I don't think it
was one of my finer moments."[6]
"Within a two-year span, the twin
towers Blow by Blow and Wired set a standard for instrumental rock that
even Beck has found difficult to match. On Wired, with first-rate
material and collaborators on hand, one of rock's most compelling
guitarists is in top form."[1]
The album peaked at No. 16 on the
Billboard 200 in August 1976, spending a total of 25 weeks on the
chart.[7] In the UK it spent five weeks on the chart and reached No.
35.[8] The album has been certified platinum by the RIAA.[9]

There
& Back is the third studio solo album by guitarist Jeff Beck,
released in June 1980 through Epic Records.[2] The album reached No. 10
and 21 on the U.S. Billboard Jazz Albums and Billboard 200 charts
respectively,[3] and No. 36 on the Swedish albums chart.[4]
The album
showcases Beck's stylistic shift towards instrumental rock whilst
largely retaining the jazz fusion elements of his two previous releases,
Blow by Blow (1975) and Wired (1976). "Star Cycle" was used for a
number of years as the theme song for both Mid-South Wrestling in the
United States and the British music programme The Tube; "The Pump" was
featured in the 1983 film Risky Business; "Too Much to Lose" is an
instrumental cover of a song composed by keyboardist Jan Hammer that was
originally featured on the Jan Hammer Group's 1977 album Melodies.
