antique copperplate engraving by Thomas Jefferys with finely detailed
portraits of Anne, Princess of Orange and Nassau, and William, Prince
of Orange
and Nassau, Stadtholder of the Seven United Provinces of the
Netherlands.
- William is shown in profile
facing left wearing the sash
and badge of the Order of the Garter and holding a heavy staff of
office in
his right hand.
- Anne is also shown in profile. She is wearing a
low-cut bejewelled dress, possibly her wedding dress, with jewels in
her hair
and a diamond necklace.
- At the center of the engraving, beneath
the two portraits is the motto of the Order of the Garter:
"Honi Soit
Qui Mal y Pense"(Shame on him who thinks evil of it), supported by two lions.

The image size of the engraving is 10.7 x 18.6 cm [4¼" x 7¼"],
and it is signed in the lower corner by Thomas Jefferys.

Condition: It is in excellent condition,
bright
and
clean, printed on a laid paper with no
marks, rips, or
tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.

It was published in the mid-18th century, after the couple's wedding
(1734) and likely before William's death (1751).
- It is
evidently from a book or one of the monthly magazines published in
London at the time, but its exact source and date is not shown.
- London engraver Thomas Jefferys was the Geographer to His
Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Jefferys had a print shop at the
corner of St. Martins Lane near Charing Cross, and many of the maps and
illustrations he engraved are today found in libraries and
distinguished collections around the world.
