Original
antique copper-plate engraved 1732 map of part of Africa's northern
coast,
along with Malta, southern Sicily, and smaller islands in the
Mediterranean
Sea.
- The map was compiled by
Christoph Cellarius and is titled "Africa Propria."
- The decorative
title cartouche depicts two Roman figures — a soldier with
shield and spear and a statesman with his hand on the head of a
kneeling supplicant.
- In the cartouche's left background flames leap from the
burning ruins
of Carthage, following the Roman destruction of the city in the Third
Punic War.
- Topography is drawn in relief, and there is excellent
detail
of features on the land, in present-day Tunisia and Libya, with place
names from classical antiquity, including Syrtis Maior (Gulf of Sidra).
- Named islands in the Mediterranean include Lotophagites
Insula (island of the lotus eaters), which is present-day Djerba or
Jerba,
believed to be the island Homer referred to in the Odyssey.
- Condition: The map is in very good condition, with
a narrow margin
at the top and no
marks,
rips, or tears. It is blank on
the back, with no printing on the reverse side, and the faint, overall
toning
gives it a
handsome antique patina. Please
see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
- This is an original, authentic antique map, not
a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to
be
genuine. It is from Cellarius' Notitia Orbis Antiqui, Sive
Geographia Plenior,
published in Leipzig, 1732 by Johann Frederick Gleditsch.
- The image area
measures 20.8
x 30.6 cm [8¼" x 12"].
